SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Western New England University football coach Keith Emery has appointed seniors John Krafick (New Milford, Conn.) and Kevin Soule (Norfolk, Mass.) team captains for the 2013 season.
Krafick, out of New Milford High School, leads the Golden Bears offense from his quarterback position. In his first season as a starter, he set school records for pass completions (176), attempts (306) and tied another benchmark for touchdown passes (14) in 2012. He also threw for 2046 yards--58 shy of breaking another WNE single-season benchmark. He is majoring in sport management.
A Medfield High product, Soule is a two-time All-New England Football Conference performer on the defensive line. He recorded 34 tackles during his junior year when he made the all-conference first team, but he made his mark by making those stops count--first for the Golden Bears in both 11 tackles for 48-yards lost and five sacks for 30 yards. He is a criminal justice major.
"John exudes confidence. He believes in himself, our system and his teammates, regardless of the situation," Emery said. "He inspires confidence in everyone around him, so it's no surprise why he is a two-time captain.
"Kevin Soule is the best football player on our team and potentially the conference. He has the strength, speed and stamina to dominate any game like he did against Framingham (State) in 2011. He commands respect with his effort, dedication to his teammates and passion for the game. He leads through words and deeds and our team follows."
The Golden Bears have their season debut at home on Sep. 7 when they host Springfield College in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
