U of R Football Announces Captains for 2013 Season

More news about: Redlands

Head Coach Mike Maynard and the football coaching staff recently announced the selection of four senior captains who will lead the team during the upcoming campaign.  Elected upon the conclusion of the 2012 season, senior defensive back Nick Kido (Honolulu, HI) and senior wide receiver Taylor Irwin (Rocklin, CA) are joined by the newly-appointed duo of senior tight end Daryl Andersen (Grand Terrace, CA) and senior defensive lineman Daniel Kane (Covina, CA.

A two-year starter, Kido returns after experiencing a career-year with Redlands in 2012.  He racked up 32 tackles, 15 of which were solo, while registering two interceptions and six pass break-ups in eight games played.

Irwin looks to build on another phenomenal campaign during which he garnered a spot on the D3football.com All-West Region Third Team.  As the team's leading receiver, he hauled in 485 total receiving yards on 43 catches for an 11.3 yards-per-catch average.  In addition, he caught three touchdown passes, the longest one being a 21-yard reception.  Furthermore, Irwin served as the Maroon and Gray's primary kick returner.  Totaling 375 yards, he averaged 28.8 yards per try, ranking him sixth in the nation for yards per kick return.  This season, Irwin has already been named a member of the USA Preseason All-American Second Team.

Andersen looks forward to competing in just his second year of football. As a true rookie, this first-year transfer made an immediate impact from the tight-end position.  During eight contests, he made 15 catches for 306 yards and three touchdowns.  At 20.4 yards-per-reception, he led the team in this category.  For his efforts, Andersen received All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Second-Team honors.  He has already collected an honor for 2013, landing on the Third Team of the USA Preseason All-America list.

After garnering Second-Team All-SCIAC accolades last year, Kane returns as one of top defensive lineman on the team and among the conference.  During the 2012 season, he racked up 36 tackles, including 17 of the solo variety.  Kane registered 5.5 tackles for a loss of 20 yards, including one sack.  In addition he forced one fumble and recovered another in the team's game against Pacific Lutheran University (WA) on September 15.

Redlands faces off against the Crusaders of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX) in a rematch of the first-round playoff game of the 2011 NCAA Division III Championships.  The teams square off on Saturday, September 7, at 7 p.m. in Ted Runner Stadium on the campus of the U of R.  Fans are encouraged to attend Rah Rah Redlands before the game, beginning at 3 p.m.
