Cardinal Football Overpowers McDaniel 48-16 In Saturday Opener

WASHINGTON – For the third consecutive series win over the Green Terror of McDaniel, the CUA Cardinals clinched an impressive 48-16 win on Saturday, Sept. 7 in Westminster, Md., at Gill Stadium on the McDaniel campus.  Six individual Cardinals reached the end zone in the seasoning opening contest.

The mighty red and black topped last season's point's superlative, breaking the most points scored in an opener with 48 on the night.

CUA dominated the contest by the 7:31 mark of the second quarter, with the Cards leading McDaniel 27-0 with four consecutive touchdowns and a 39-yard completed touchdown pass by EJ Montgomery to John Serdakowski.

McDaniel finally got on the board at the 3:24 mark with a 27-yard field goal.

The Cardinals increased the McDaniel deficit to 34-3, when TJ Tutone took his turn as quarterback and completed a seven-yard pass to Andrew Oullette at the 1:34 mark.

CUA returned to the gridiron for the second half of play still thriving off the first half momentum.  Montgomery completed a three-yard pass to Tucker Hubbell at the 5:05 mark of the third quarter for a 41-3 lead.

The final Cardinal touchdown of the night came on 12-yard pass from Tutone to Christian Baker.

The Green Terror reached double figures on a combined 36-yard run in exactly five minutes.

Tutone threw 120 yards and completed 13-of-the-17 attempts, while Montgomery was 6-of-10 on 69 yards.

Mike Pitsenberger rushed for 179 yards without a single loss, while Evan Calvo rushed for 100 yards, assisting the team's total 364 yards gained.

Connor Stueckler notched seven unassisted tackles, while Anthony Albanese, Mike Skehill and Richard Roach each tallied five unassisted tackles.

Peter Rosa was a perfect 6-of-6 in field goals, as Conor Creagan opened the season with 139 yards on four punts and night-high 42-yard punt.

The Cardinals dominated McDaniel in multiple categories, especially the rushing game going 64-of-364.  In terms of total offense, CUA gathered 553 yards in 91 plays in comparison to McDaniel's 332 yards in 76 plays.

CUA opens at home on Friday, Sept. 20, welcoming Carnegie Mellon to Cardinal Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
