Delaware Valley 42, Misericordia 17
DALLAS (PA) – Delaware Valley College jumped out to a 35-3, first-half lead and went on to defeat host Misericordia University, 42-17, in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opener for both teams.
The Aggies, who moved to 25th in the latest D3football.com poll following last week's come-from-behind victory over 2012 NCAA playoff qualifier Rowan University, improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Cougars, who are in their second year of collegiate football fell to 0-2 and 0-1.
The first half was all Delaware Valley, starting with the opening kickoff as Darren Parrott returned the boot 61 yards to the Misericordia 29-yard line. The drive ended with a blocked field goal, but the offense got the ball right back as John Marcelline forced a fumble and Trae Hall recovered at the Cougar 23. Four plays later, quarterback Aaron Wilmer then hit Bobby Marterella for a 15-yard touchdown pass, the first scoring catch of his career. Brandon Snyder added the extra-point for a 7-0 lead 2:50 in.
Misericordia fumbled on their next possession and Quinton Bryant recovered it at the Cougar 43. Wilmer then faced a third-and-10 from the 14-yard line when he found Lewis Vincent in the end zone for a 14-0 lead midway through the quarter.
Misericordia got on the scoreboard for the first time ever against Delaware Valley (DelVal won 70-0 last year) as a 17-play, 84-yard drive was capped by a 20-yard field goal by Patrick Newins. However, the Aggies responded less than two minutes later as Wilmer found a wide-open Rasheed Bailey for a 49-yard touchdown and a 21-3 lead.
Delaware Valley then scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to take the 35-3 lead into the break. Chris Smallwood had a one-yard scoring run with 7:53 on the clock while Parrott had a 14-yard trip to the end zone with 2:12 remaining.
The third quarter belonged to the Cougars as they had the ball for nearly 11 minutes and scored touchdowns of 14 and 16 yards by Jeff Puckett and Frank Santarsiero respectively. The Aggies ended the scoring with 3:28 left in the contest as Parrott scored on a nifty 18 yard run to cap a five-play, 67-yard drive.
Delaware Valley notched 461 yards of total offense the day with Wilmer going 13-for-20 for 209 yards and three scores in the air. Parrott, a senior making his second collegiate start in place injured all-region tailback Kyle Schuberth, netted 108 yards and two scores on 16 carries. Smallwood had 61 yards and one touchdown on 11 rushes.
Misericordia ran 93 offensive plays and netted 436 yards, including 370 on the ground. Puckett, the team's quarterback who ran for 301 yards and five scores last week, went for 159 yards and one score on 24 carries this week. He was 6-for-10 for 60 yards in the air.
