Bridgewater Upends Greensboro, 38-13

More news about: Bridgewater (Va.)
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Behind an efficient offense and a defense that scored for the second straight week, the Bridgewater Eagles football team took down the Greensboro Pride by a 38-13 tally.

Bridgewater (2-0) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the first. The Eagles capped off a three-minute drive with a Willie Logan seven-yard keeper to take a 7-0 lead after the game's first drive.

After the Bridgewater defense forced a quick three-and-out from the Pride, the Eagles offense struck again on the next drive. Cassidy Burns put the finishing touches on a quick four-play, 61 yard drive with an eight yard touchdown catch to hand the Eagles a 14-0 lead with 8:41 to go in the first frame.

The Eagles posted another three-and-out and looked to punch the ball into the endzone again, when Logan connected with Michael Colee on a touchdown strike, but it was called back due to penalty and the Eagles were forced to punt the ball away, keeping the score at a 14-0 Bridgewater advantage, which is how things would remain as the game shifted to the second quarter.

After a pair of exchanges, the Eagles started on their own 30 before quickly moving across midfield. Logan hit Colee to get the Eagles into Greensboro territory before Burns made a tremendous one-handed grab on the Pride sideline to get Bridgewater inside the Greensboro redzone. One play later, Jacob Wright stormed in from 12 yards out to extend the Bridgewater lead to 21-0 with 10:48 to play in the first half.

Greensboro (0-2) got a semblance of an offense going in the second quarter, but the Eagles defense remained up to the task while the offense drove deep into Pride territory again late in the frame. Logan hit Wimer on a short two-yard pass to bring up fourth down and set up sophomore Chandler DeHaven for a 29-yard chip shot field goal. Following a Bridgewater timeout, DeHaven pushed his kick wide right to keep the Bridgewater lead at a 21-0 tally at the intermission.

After a slow start to the third quarter, Greensboro got on the scoreboard late in the stanza when quarterback Ryan Throndset hit Dexter Russell on a 29-yard pattern to cut the Bridgewater lead down to 21-7 with 5:31 showing on the third quarter clock.

Bridgewater pounded the ball deep into Greensboro territory as Wright bulled to the one-yard line, bringing up a fourth and goal as the clock expired on the third quarter.

Out of the quarter break, the Eagles elected to boot a short 18-yard field goal, which DeHaven easily converted to put Bridgewater up by a 24-7 tally early in the final frame.

The Bridgewater defense forced a quick Greensboro three-and-out before Jordan Hartmanreturned a Mark Bush punt 31 yards to get the Eagles deep into Pride territory. On the first play of the drive, Wright bolted off of the left side and sprinted to the end zone from 25 yards out to go over 100 yards on the day and extend the Bridgewater lead to 31-7 early in the fourth.

Greensboro looked to respond midway through the quarter as the Pride marched into the Bridgewater red zone. The Pride reached the Bridgewater 10 before Sammy Colemanstepped in front of a Throndset pass at the five and returned the ball 95 yards to the end zone to build the Bridgewater lead to 38-7 with nine minutes to play.

Following the Bridgewater score, the Pride and backup quarterback Mac Graham drove deep into Bridgewater territory before Graham punched the ball in from the two and cut the lead to 38-13 with 5:06 remaining after the Pride two-point conversion attempt failed.

Sophomore Ross Rushing entered the game over the final five-plus minutes and ended the game on a clock-grinding drive as the Eagles moved to 2-0 on the year with a 38-13 victory over the Pride.

Logan was impressive and efficient for the second straight week, throwing for 169 yards and a touchdown on 14-of-18 passing.

Wright crossed the century mark with 109 yards on 18 carries. The junior bolted to the endzone twice to lead a Bridgewater rushing attack that cruised for over 200 yards on the afternoon.

Lee led the Bridgewater receivers with four catches for 61 yards, while Burns added three catches and a touchdown grab.

Defensively, linebacker Andrew Palmer tallied seven tackles to lead the way, while Coleman added an interception return for a score and four tackles in the win.

Throndset finished the day 15-of-25 for 132 yards and a score, but was intercepted once.

Warren Scott rushed for 52 yards on 15 carries to lead the Pride rushing attack.

Russell hauled in a game-high 10 passes for 100 yards and a score to lead the way for the Greensboro receiving corps.

Greensboro was led defensively by Julian Cinotti's eight tackle effort.

Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when it returns home to take on Ferrum. Kickoff from the Jopson Athletic Complex is set for 1 p.m.
