Delaware Valley College 41, Stevenson University 23

More news about: Delaware Valley

DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College senior tailback Kyle Schuberth carried the ball 37 times for 214 yards and a school record-tying four touchdowns as the Aggies scored 34 of the game's final 40 points to come from behind and defeat Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) foe Stevenson University, 41-23.

Delaware Valley, ranked as high as 16th in national Division III polls, is the lone remaining undefeated team in the 10-team MAC as it improved to 4-0 overall. The Aggies and preseason conference favorite Lycoming College are the only teams to have 3-0 marks in league action and the two will meet next Saturday in Williamsport. Saturday's loss was the first for Stevenson as the Mustangs fell to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the MAC.

Schuberth missed the first two games of the season with an injury, but has come back with a flourish. He netted 148 yards and one score in last week's win at Albright and followed it up with his biggest collegiate performance to date. His four rushing touchdowns tied the mark that was accomplished five previous times. The 214 yards was the fourth-highest, single-game effort in school history while the 37 carries tied him for sixth in that category.

Schuberth and his teammates got off to a slow start as he had just 17 yards midway through the second quarter. Meanwhile, Stevenson took a 17-7 lead when quarterback John Gasparovic hit Cortez Taylor for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 7:45 to go in the half.

Delaware Valley began to get on track after that score as it went on an 18-play, 75-yard scoring drive that took more than seven minutes off the clock. The Aggies converted a pair of fourth-down plays on the drive and capped it with Schuberth's second score of the game, a two-yard run with 24 seconds left. Brandon Snyder added the extra point to pull Delaware Valley to within three, 17-14, at the break.

The Aggies stalled near midfield on the opening drive of the second half and were forced the punt. The Mustangs' Jeromie Miller fumbled the fair catch attempt and Delaware Valley's Dashown Waller recovered it at the 13-yard line. Schuberth carried the ball four times and picked up all 13 yards, the last putting him in the end zone from a yard out for a 21-17 lead with 11:06 remaining in the third.

Gasparovic was intercepted by Chris Vega at the Delaware Valley 35-yard on the fourth play of Stevenson's first drive of the second half. The Aggies drove down the field and put the ball in the end zone, but it was called back because of a penalty. They eventually settled for a 32-yard field goal by Snyder and a 24-17 score with 5:32 left in the third.

Two plays into the Mustangs' next drive, Gasparovic was picked off again, this time by Pete O'Hara at the Stevenson 38. The Aggies' possession stalled at the 14-yard line and Snyder booted home a 31-yard field goal for a 10-point advantage with 2:22 remaining in the quarter.

After a Mustang punt, Delaware Valley went on a six-play, 59-yard scoring drive that was capped by quarterback Aaron Wilmer's two-yard touchdown pass to tight end Max Stella just 1:53 into the fourth quarter.

Stevenson put itself back in the game as Gasparovic hit Miller for a 65-yard touchdown pass with 11:27 left on the clock. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 34-23. The Aggies iced the game late as an eight-play, 44-yard drive saw Schuberth tie the record with his fourth touchdown, a one-yard rush with 47 seconds remaining.

Schuberth opened the scoring on the day as his two-yard run capped a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive for Delaware Valley with 5:37 left in the first quarter. Stevenson matched it on the first play of the second quarter as, on fourth-and-goal, tailback Trey Lee threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Wysocki. Charlie Cornell then added a 30-yard field goal with 10:26 left in the half. Stevenson added seven more points on the touchdown catch by Taylor before Delaware Valley rallied big for the win.

Wilmer completed 17 of 30 passes for 174 yards and one touchdown for the Aggies. Defensively, the allowed just 116 yards in the second half (316 total) with 65 coming on one big play by Stevenson. Danny Wynne had 12 tackles while Vega had four stops and the two interceptions.

Gasparovic completed 16 of 33 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted three times. Miller caught six passes for 114 yards and one score. Razonte Dunn led the defense with 10 tackles.
