Albright Football Beats King's in MAC Play

More news about: Albright

The Albright College football team recovered from a slow start to defeat King's College in the Monarchs' Homecoming game, 48-29 on Saturday in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

Quarterback TJ Luddy completed 24-of-35 passes for 305 yards, 3 TDs and no interceptions. Seniors Daniel McNair (9 catches, 139 yards, TD) and Devron Clark (7 catches, 118 yards, TD) were his top targets. On the ground, freshman Brian Wickkiser rushed for 39 yards on six carries late in the game.

Senior Matt Pattison led the way with seven total tackles, including two in the backfield. Linebacker Sean Cunningham also had seven tackles.

Three touchdowns were scored in a stretch of 2:26 early in the second half, beginning with an 8-yard running score from Ty Hughes (89 rushing yards on 18 carries) that put the Red and White ahead 21-10.

Junior Chris Stephens blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone for a 28-10 Albright lead, but the Monarchs struck on the very next play. Quarterback Tyler Hartranft hit Dan Kempa over the top for an 84-yard score to make it 28-17.

Luddy found McNair down to the King's two yardline, and Hughes carried it in two plays later for a 35-17 scoreline.

In the fourth quarter, Luddy hit McNair for 45 yards, and then for five yards into the end zone, making it 41-23 Lions. Uriah Brickhouse would add a late score as well.

A pair of blocked kicks had kept the Monarchs in the game heading into halftime.

The Lions attempted a 51-yard field goal on the final play of the half, but Daniel Sobolewski's boot was knocked down by Tyler Struckus and returned the other way by Anthony Martuccio. The touchdown left Albright with just a 14-10 lead at the break.

The Lions had a 38-yard field goal attempt blocked on the game's opening drive. Kyle McGrath rushed for 47 yards inside the Albright 10-yard line, but the big play was called back on a holding penalty.

After King's opened the scoring with a first quarter field goal, Luddy found Josh MacLeod early in the second half for a touchdown and a 7-3 lead.

The Lions stalled on a fourth-and-one later in the second quarter, but got the ball back and scored on Luddy's 29-yard TD pass to Clark. After the Lions stopped a fourth down try in the dying seconds, Luddy hit Clark for 17 yards to set up Sobolewski's 51-yard try.

The Lions (2-2, 1-2) earn their first Middle Atlantic Conference victory of the season and will play next weekend at FDU-Florham. King's falls to 0-3, 0-2 on the year.
