Maritime Takes Three of Four ECFC Weekly Honors
THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (September 23, 2013) – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference announced its weekly awards for the 4th Week of the college football season on Monday. Maritime was well represented on the list as winners of three of the four awards handed out by the conference.
The Privateers had the offensive player of the week as freshman Isaiah Covington (Brooklyn, N.Y./FDR) earned recognition in his first collegiate start. Maritime also picked up their second straight special teams player of the week as sophomore placekicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) took home the award for week 4. The Privateers also picked up their second rookie of the week honors as freshman defensive lineman Griffin Westcott (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) was selected as the league's top rookie performer this week.
Covington was acknowledged after a week that saw Covington lead the team in rushing yards as he picked up 81 yards during Saturday's contest against William Paterson. He also led the team with 19 carries which included a 34-yard pickup as he raced into the end zone for a third quarter touchdown. Covington also led the team in yards-per-rush (4.3) amongst all Privateer rushers with more than five carries on the game.
Dietrich picks up special teams honors a week after punter John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) earned the weekly nod during the third week of the season. Dietrich had a busy day on Saturday after being called into action nine times against the Pioneers. Included in his nine kicks were five kickoffs that went for a season-high 268 yards for an average of 53.6 yards per kickoff. He was also called into duty for a 33-yard field goal and converted to put Maritime's first points on the board. Dietrich also converted on two PATs, to tie his season-high.
Westcott picked up his first career recognition after leading all Maritime rookies on defense with three tackles on Saturday. Included in his three tackles was a half-tackle for a loss of five yards in the fourth quarter to force a 2nd-and-15. Earlier in the half, Westcott was responsible for a pass breakup as well.
The Privateers will open up ECFC play this Saturday against Anna Maria for a 2 p.m. kickoff against the Amcats. Check out MaritimeAthletics.com later this week for a full preview of the team's conference opener.
