Union looks for first win in league game at Springfield
SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union College's football squad is on the road for the first time in three weeks. The Dutchmen will play at Springfield College for a Liberty League contest Saturday at 12 p.m.
The Dutchmen will look to bounce back from a 30-20 home defeat to St. Lawrence. It was only the third time in 22 years that the Saints downed Union. Running back Darnel Thomas had a big day for the hosts as he led Union with 122 yards on nine carries. It was his second career 100 yard rushing game. The defense continues to impress, allowing 81 yards rushing per game with two games under 80 yards rushing by the opponent. Jake LaRovera leads the squad in tackles with 22 and Jake Lebowitz had a 17 yard touchdown run on a fumble recovery against St. Lawrence.
Last season against Springfield, Thomas and T.J. Franzese each had 94 yards rushing while Connor Eck passed for three touchdowns in a 49-21 win at Frank Bailey Field. Springfield leads the all-time series, 9-7 after last season's meeting, which was the first for Springfield in Liberty League play.
The Pride is 3-1 and opened 3-0 including shutout wins over Huson at and Mt. Ida. But Rochester pulled out a last minute 36-35 home win over Springfield last week. Springfield leads all of NCAA Division III in rushing offense while the Dutchmen have the top rushing defense in the league.
