#11 Wesley Blanks Virginia-Lynchburg

More news about: Wesley

DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's 11th-ranked football team scored touchdowns on its first two drives and held Virginia-Lynchburg to just 118 yards of total offense in a 40-0 win over the Dragons on Saturday afternoon at Scott D. Miller Stadium. The Wolverines improve to 5-1 on the season while VUL falls to 1-5.

The defense forced a three-and-out on the Dragons opening drive which ended on a sack by senior safety Dominique "Duke" Herald. After the punt, Joe Callahan led an eight-play, 55 yard drive that took just over two minute, culminating with a 19-yard touchdown strike to Steve Koudossou. Also key on the drive was a 19-yard pass on third down to Bryce Shade which got the Wolverines into the red zone.

Sosthene Kapepula then intercepted a pass on VUL's first play on the next drive and returned it to the three-yard line. Three plays later, Callahan snuck in right behind his offensive line to put Wesley on top, 14-0 with 8:28 left in the first quarter.

Just four minutes into the second quarter, Jon Storck made the first of four field goals on the day for Wesley, which is a new school-record. His 20-yard boot was followed up by a 27-yard field goal by freshman Adam Szczerba.

Two more field goals in the third quarter off the feet of Storck and Szczerba increased the Wolverines lead to 26-0 with 8:20 left in the third. After the defense, led by Jordan Wescott, forced another three-and-out, Callahan once again took the offense quickly down the field for a touchdown.

Starting the possession at its own seven-yard line, Callahan ran the ball twice for gains of 11 and 21 yards, sandwiching a pair of first down passes to Andrew Monaghan and Jeremiah Howe. After Callahan's longest run of the year, Rick Jackson found the endzone from two yards out to make the score, 33-0 with 3:04 left in the third.

Jake McCusker relieved Callahan to start the fourth quarter and threw his first career touchdown pass to Tahree McQueen from 15 yards out to cap the scoring on the day.

Callahan finished the day with 283 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 45 yards. Jackson ran for a team-high 49 yards while Howe went for 141 yards receiving on three catches.

Defensively, Jared Morris, Luke Maginnis and Kapepula all had eight tackles apiece while the Wolverines recorded 11 sacks and 14 tackles for loss. Wescott had a huge game with a sack, a fumble recovery and an interception. Zane Campbell also picked off a pass while Aamir Petrose had seven tackles and a sack.

Rowan University hosts Wesley on Saturday, October 19, at 2 pm.
