Panthers Defeat Vikings
ROME, Ga. -- Receiver Michael Cowan caught two touchdown passes as Birmingham-Southern College defeated Berry College, 42-0, at Darlington School on Saturday.
B-SC improved to 4-3 and 2-2 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Vikings dropped to 1-7 and 0-4.
BC forced two early turnovers, but could not turn them into points. Trailing 7-0, Berry's Bradley Brown intercepted a Tyler Beachem pass at the Panther 30-yard line. Yet the Vikings could not move closer to the end zone and turned the ball over on downs. The score remained 7-0 after the first quarter.
On the first play of the second period, Jordan Arnett intercepted Beachem in the end zone. The Vikes then moved the ball and mustered two first downs. Once again, the home team turned the ball over on downs, this time near midfield.
Beachem then connected with Cowan for a 37-yard strike. After the PAT, B-SC led 14-0.
BC quarterback Sandon Mims (16-30, 72 yards), making his first collegiate start, was efficient early in the game. He garnered another first down on the next offensive series for Berry, but Mitchell Blanchard was forced to punt. Mims' one interception occurred on BC's last offensive series in the fourth quarter. Blanchard had a busy day with nine punts for 341 yards (37.9 average).
The Panthers tacked another two touchdowns before halftime and cruised to the win.
"I was proud our guys kept fighting the whole time, and I don't need to look at the film to see that," said Berry Head Coach Tony Kunczewski. "When you're up 35-0 it's easy to play hard; when you're down 35-0 it's difficult to do so. We are battered and bruised, but we're gonna keep on fighting."
B-SC outgained Berry with 457 yards to 156. Evan Kasian paced the Panthers with 110 rushing yards on nine carries. In all, the visitors produced 309 running yards.
On defense, Berry's Bryce Bailey recorded a game-high 14 tackles (five solo). Christopher Lilly had 117 all-purpose yards, but was held without a reception. He did, however, force a pass interference call on a Panther defensive back.
The Vikings travel to Millsaps (7-0, 3-0) in Jackson, Miss. next Saturday.
