Brockport Defense Dominates Montclair

More news about: Brockport

Freshman Jake Brickler (Hilton, NY/Hilton) had 14 tackles and fellow freshman Cortland Haines (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) had nine tackles and four sacks leading The College at Brockport Football team to its first-ever New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) shutout in a 24-0 victory over Montclair State Saturday in the final regular season home game for the Golden Eagles on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.

Equally impressive as the defensive effort was another dominating rushing performance by freshman Dan Andrews (Rochester, NY/Franklin) who finished with 230 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. Andrews has over 100 yards rushing in four of his five starts this season and two games with over 200 yards each.

Brockport (6-3 Overall, 5-1 NJAC) remains in a first place tie with Rowan after the Profs held on for a tight 7-6 win over Kean Saturday. The Golden Eagles have won five consecutive games outscoring opponents 159-76 during the stretch.

The Golden Eagles scored the only points of the first half on a 21-yard field goal and scored the first touchdown on the opening drive of the second half to take a 10-0 lead. Late in the third quarter Haines sacked the Montclair State (3-6, 2-4) quarterback forcing a fumble and defensive tackle Tarik Bennett (Mt. Vernon, NY/Mt. St. Michael) picked  up the loose ball and scampered 25 yards into the end zone for a 17-0 lead.

Andrews capped the scoring with a 32-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Brockport.

In the first quarter, Brockport drove deep into Montclair territory before an intercepted pass ended the drive but Brockport's defense responded forcing a three-and-out drive leading to a Brockport drive that stalled on the Montcair four-yard line before Tyler Perna (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) booted a 21-yard field goal to give Brockport the lead.

Colby Morabito (Rochester, NY/Hilton) intercepted a pass on the first play from scrimmage two possessions later and Brockport drove the length of the field as Andrews started the drive with a 78-yard run taking the ball all the way to the Montclair 13-yard line. The drive did not produce points after Brockport fumbled on the 1-yard line.

Montclair nearly tied the game at the end of the first half but missed a 35-yard field goal attempt wide left as time expired in the first half.

On the first drive of the second half, Brockport moved down the field quickly thanks to a pass and catch from Wayne Bonsell (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) to Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) for a gain of 31 yards. The next play, Andrews broke free over the right side for a 26-yard TD run.

Montclair threatened later in the quarter intercepting a pass near midfield giving the Hawks good field position. After a short run to start the drive, Kharif Pryor (Brooklyn, NY/Thomas Jefferson) intercepted a pass along the sideline to end the threat.

Two plays later, Brockport gave the ball right back with an interception and Montclair started another drive from midfield.

On the first play of the drive, the Hawks were flagged for a 15-yard personal foul and after a short rushing gain and facing a 3rd-and-27, Montclair looked to pass. Haines broke into the backfield and chased down quarterback Ryan Davies sacking him for a loss and stripping him of the ball at the 25-yard line. Bennett scooped up the loose ball and carried it in for the TD.

Montclair was unable to put together any offense in the fourth quarter moving the ball just 25 yards on 14 plays for the entire quarter.

Brockport held Montclair to 196 yards of total offense including just 46 yards of passing offense in the game and forced the Hawks to punt the ball 10 times. Montclair was also just 1-for-13 on third down conversions.

Andrews was responsible for nearly 60 percent of the Brockport offense (230 of 394 total yards) and Mrozek led the receivers with three catches and 110 yards. Defensively, Brickler was the leading tackler with his 14 stops while Anthoni Bianchi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) had 11 tackles. Haines finished with nine tackles (seven solo) with 6 ½ tackles behind the line of scrimmage and the four sacks. Jeff Scialo (Bellmore, NY/Bellmore-JFK) had eight tackles and a sack for the Golden Eagles.
