ORANGE, Calif. – For almost the whole game, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team hung around. A three minute stretch to close out the game put some distance between the two teams on the scoreboard as Chapman pulled away for a 42-20 win over CMS in a SCIAC football game on Saturday night at Wilson Field. The loss dropped CMS to 2-6, 1-5 in SCIAC while Chapman improved to 7-1 overall, 5-1 in in conference play.

With 2:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, CMS got within one score at 28-20 after freshman QB Trey Reynolds capped off a 16 play, 83-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run. Reynolds ran for 43 yards and threw for 217 yards but did throw three interceptions on the night.

After the CMS touchdown, Chapman recovered an onside kick and then answered with a rushing touchdown of its own by Cody Chapple to stretch the lead back to two scores at 35-20 with 1:35 remaining in the game. CMS' last-ditch effort on its next offensive possession ended with an interception thrown by Reynolds which Drew Demarco returned 45 yards for a Chapman touchdown to make the score 42-20.

CMS trailed by just a score of 7-0 at halftime in part because CMS forced two Chapman fumbles in the first half. Twice CMS managed to get within four points of Chapman in the second half. On the opening possession of the second half, CMS drove all the way to the Chapman 6-yard line but the drive stalled and CMS settled for a 23-yard field goal by freshman K Matthew Aven to narrow the score to 7-3 with 9:38 remaining in the third quarter. On the drive, senior WR Kris Otterholt had two of his game-high nine receptions including a 19-yard catch from Reynolds. Otterholt had 86 yards receiving for the Stags while senior WR Greg Wilson added 78 yards on four catches including a 49-yarder.

Chapman answered quickly with its ground attack. After a 42-yard kickoff return, Chapman went 52 yards on five plays, all on the ground, to go ahead 14-3 on a 7-yard touchdown run by Chapple. The Chapman running back had four touchdowns in the game and 102 yards rushing while Kean Stancil ran for 159 yards for Chapman.

With 4:25 left in the third quarter, CMS got within four points for the second time, this time on a 3-yard run by sophomore RB Steven Kohr set up Wilson's 49-yard catch. Kohr had 57 yards rushing for CMS.

CMS put up 422 yards of total offense in the game including 170 yards on the ground. On defense, sophomore LB A.J. Herrara had a team-high 11 tackles and a fumble recovery while sophomore DB James Ingram had 10 tackles.

Next up for CMS is its Homecoming Game on Saturday, Nov. 16 vs. Pomona-Pitzer at 1 p.m. on Zinda Field.
