TOWSON, MD- Hartwick senior defensive end Joe Seney (Gloversville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) on Tuesday was selected to the Capital One Academic All-American second team. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

Seney was one of 24 players named to the second team and one of 48 overall. He was the second player from the Empire 8 named an All-American along with St. John Fisher running back Cody Miller.

Seney carries a 3.60 cumulative grade-point average and is a Computer Science and Mathematics double major at Hartwick. He has been inducted into the National Mathematics Honor Society, Kappa Mu Epsilon, and has been awarded the Andrew B. Saxon Fellowship. Seney was also a Phillip S. Wilder, Jr. Award for academic distinction. In addition, he interned with the Air Force Research Lab in Rome, NY.

Last week, Seney was named an Empire 8 Honorable Mention. He finished the 2013 season with 47 tackles (32 solo, 15 assists), 7.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one quarterback hurry. He led the Hawks in forced fumbles and was second in sacks while tying for third in the conference in sacks and leading in forced fumbles. Nationally, Seney is ninth in forced fumbles.

On October 8, Seney was named to the D3football Team of the Week. He had four tackles, two sacks, two for losses, and two forced fumbles in Hartwick's 21-9 victory over Ithaca. Both of his sacks also forced fumbles, including one on Ithaca's first offensive play of the second half that was picked up and returned for a Hartwick touchdown to give the Hawks a 21-0 lead. On that play, Seney not only sacked the quarterback and forced a fumble that would lead to a TD, but also threw the crucial block that sprang the touchdown.

Maintenance in progress.
