McAllen, WPI Rumble Past Becker in Non-Conference Finale

More news about: WPI

WORCESTER – Sophomore Sean McAllen (Prospect, CT) scored three touchdowns, and accumulated game-bests of 119 yards on 25 attempts and 85 yards on three receptions, in a 38-0 victory over Becker in the Engineers last non-conference football game on the 2017 schedule.

The Crimson and Gray (2-1) head to Springfield Saturday for their first conference game in the NEWMAC era at 2:30pm. Becker (0-3) heads to Dean for a noon kickoff.

It is the first time since 2009 the Engineers, who have allowed 10 points in the last five games versus the Hawks, posted a pair of shutouts in a single season.

Both teams struggled offensively to begin the game. Becker's first scoring chance was a 39-yard field goal miss to the left with 4:08 left in the first. Junior Spencer Herrington (Clearfield, PA) was successful with a 24-yard FG to put the Engineers on the board with 6:09 remaining in the half.

On the next Becker play, senior Lou Garcia (Springfield, MA) forced a fumble to get the ball back for the Crimson and Gray, which turned into a 33-yard TD from senior Blake Rice (North Branford, CT) to classmate Corey Coogan (North Kingstown, RI).

The teams later traded fumbles beginning with Becker's recovery on the exchange by WPI. The next play saw junior Luca Cerasani (Abington, MA) force the turnover that was recovered for a scoop and score by classmate Francis Lubega (Ashland, MA).

WPI then began scoring early and often beginning with a six-yard scamper by McAllen 12:43 into the third. He struck again with 12:42 left in the game on a one-yard plunge. With 8:21 to go, McAllen and Rice connected on a 45-yard TD reception.

Rice finished 14-for-31 with 235 yards and two passing TDs. Sophomore Connor Field (Granby, CT) averaged six yards on 10 rushing attempts. Coogan added 56 yards and a score on two catches.

Sophomore Nick Ostrowski (Charlton, MA) led WPI with eight tackles (seven solo) and had a tackle for-loss. Lubega and junior Sam Malafronte (Abington, MA) each had six stops and a sack. Cerasani posted five unassisted tackles, including five for-loss and two sacks. Six more Engineers were credited with tackles for-loss as senior Dereck Pacheco (Barnstable, MA), freshman Jack Gerulskis (Southboro, MA) and sophomore Mike McGoff (Ashland, MA) registered a sack.

Junoir Nas Sinkfield-Shelton (New Rochelle, NY) was 7-for-16 passing and the Hawks leading rusher with 22 yards. Junior Ryan Fernandez (Miami, FL) paced the receiving corps with an 11-yard catch. Freshman Tyler Grant (Hudson, NH) boomed 10 punts for 318 yards.

Sophomore Michael Bianco (Manorville, NY) led all student-athletes with 10 tackles (nine solo), including one for-loss. Sophomore Shane Padeni (Leicester, MA) followed with nine individual stops. Sophomore Christian Perkins (Melrose, MA), freshman Jared Zieman (Bethel, CT) and sophomore Dajon Pereira (Central Falls, RI) all had a tackle for-loss.

WPI had the better of most of the statistical categories, including a 420-39 margin in total offense.
