Trinity Football Falls to Centre During Alumni Weekend

More news about: Trinity (Texas)

San Antonio - The Tiger football team suffered its first Southern Athletic Association loss of the season on Saturday, as Trinity fell 27-21 to Centre (KY) College.

GAME SUMMARY

After trailing 27-7 heading into the fourth quarter, the Tigers scored a pair of touchdowns to make it a one-score game, but a third consecutive come-from-behind win was not to be as Centre was able to hold on for the win.

Centre started off the scoring with a first-quarter touchdown, but the ensuing extra point was blocked to keep it a 6-0 game.

Trinity took its only lead of the game early in the second quarter, as Wyatt Messex plunged in from one yard out for the touchdown.

Centre answered immediately on its next drive to regain the lead, and the game remained 13-7 at the half.

The Colonels extended the lead with two more touchdowns in the third quarter to take control of the game heading into the final 15 minutes.

Trinity's first fourth-quarter score came on a 51-yard drive that made it a 27-14 game with 7:03 remaining.

Centre chewed up 3:31 on the clock during its next drive, but the Tiger defense forced a punt, and the offense took over on the 20 yard line with 3:27 left.

Trinity worked its way near midfield through the air, then caught the Centre defense off guard with a run play, and Evan McDowell raced to the end zone for a 45-yard score that left 2:02 on the clock.

The Tiger defense stopped the Colonels short on first down with just over a minute to play, but Trinity's seventh penalty of the day gave Centre a first down, and the visitors were able to run out the clock from there.

HIGHLIGHTS

Trinity had its four-game win streak snapped in the loss, falling to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in SAA play. Centre improves to 5-1 and 3-1 SAA to draw even with the Tigers in the conference standings.

Evan McDowell finished as the leading rusher for the Tigers, ripping off 83 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. McDowell's 45-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter was a career-long run for the Tiger senior.

Tommy Lavine led all players with six receptions for 63 yards, while Rhodes Legg caught four passes for 36 yards.
