WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (0-6, 0-5 NJAC) suffered a 59-7 Homecoming loss to visiting No. 18/19 Frostburg State (5-1, 4-1 NJAC) Oct. 14.
The Bobcats took the opening drive 52 yards, the last six a touchdown burst between the tackles by junior running back Jamaal Morant. Senior Hassan Mostafa kicked the extra point and Frostburg State led 7-0 with 11:12 on the clock.
Junior quarterback Connor Cox found classmate Noah Teeter in the back of the end zone for an eight-yard score (5:18), and senior running back Jordan Brown leapt over the pile from one yard out for a 21-0 count with 1:19 left in the opening period.
Mostafa's 22-yard field goal was good with 10:05 remaining in the second quarter, and junior wide receiver Sergio Andino caught a swing pass and tip-toed his way along the right sideline for a 26-yard TD less than seven minutes later. Cox connected with senior wideout Maurice Fisher at the left pylon from 17 yards out to make it a 38-0 margin 7.1 seconds before halftime.
A 52-yard Cox completion to Andino up the right seam on Frostburg State's first possession of the second half pushed the lead to 45-0 with 12:10 on the clock.
The WP defense came up with a stop for a loss on fourth-and-one, giving the Pioneers the ball on their own 48-yard line. William Paterson showed a reverse, but senior running back Aqeel Daniels-Lundy pulled the ball back and threw to open classmate Tyler Vivian, who turned it into a 52-yard touchdown down the right side of the field. Sophomore Brandon Harley tacked on the PAT to get the Pioneers on the scoreboard with 6:25 to play in the third.
Freshman quarterback T.J. Peer was flushed out of the pocket but rolled left and found sophomore Jordan Carter for a 15-yard score (52-7, 3:18 in third), and FSU finished the scoring with a two-yard carry off left tackle by freshman Malcolm Facey less than four minutes into the fourth quarter.
Senior quarterback James Waldron was 8-for-15 for 49 yards, and he carried six times for a team-best 38 yards. Vivian hauled in four passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore linebacker Jadrien Travieso collected a career-high 10 tackles for the Pioneer defense. Freshman defensive back Isaiah Hunt also notched a career best with eight stops (four solo), and junior linebacker Charles Faulkner chipped in eight tackles as well.
Cox went 17-for-19 for 294 yards and four scores under center for Frostburg State. Facey carried nine times for 72 yards and a TD, while Andino scored twice while gaining 138 yards on six receptions.
Freshman linebacker Jake Broschart paced the Bobcats with eight tackles. Senior defensive lineman Niles Scott, senior linebacker Shawn Magginson and freshman defensive lineman Trevor Booker each tallied four stops.
William Paterson will travel to Christopher Newport Saturday, Oct. 21, for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
