NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Christopher Newport scored the biggest win in the program's three-year history with a 16-12 win over No. 8 Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon at POMOCO Stadium in front of 3,366 fans.

After forcing a Bridgewater punt on the first possession of the game, the Captains took an early lead when they went 70 yards on 14 plays. The drive was capped by a Mario Marin touchdown from 4 yards out. Jason Broskie's point after attempt was good to give CNU a 7-0 lead with 5:08 left in the first quarter.

Bridgewater struck on their very next possession as they went 55 yards on six plays. The Eagles tied the score on a Brandon Wakefield 5-yard rush. Kyle Beach's PAT tied the score at 7-7 with 3:29 left in the first quarter.
After a four-and-out by CNU, Bridgewater regained possession and took a 10-7 lead with 13 seconds left in the first quarter. Beach connected on a 34-yard field goal.

CNU started the second half much liked they started their first possession in the first half, marching 80 yards in 15 plays when Marin again struck from 1 yard out. Broskie's kick hit off the right upright and the Captains led 13-10.

The Captains' Greg Bolton intercepted a pass at the Bridgewater 28-yard line and returned it to the Bridgewater 9. The drive ended on a Broskie field goal from 22 yards out to extend the lead to 16-10 with 13:28 left in the fourth quarter.

After a failed fourth-down conversion attempt by CNU, Bridgewater regained possession with 5:02 left in the game at its own 25-yard line. The Eagles drove deep into Captains territory but were turned away four times from the CNU 11 with less then two minutes left in the game.

Bridgewater sacked Phillip Jones in the end zone with no time remaining to make the score 16-12.

Marin led the rushing attack for CNU with 80 yards on 18 carries. Thomas Thornton added 56 yards on 15 carries. Phillip Jones was 11-for-19 with one interception for 115 yards in the air. George Jones had three catches for 36 yards, Josh Horn had one catch for 24 yards, Brian Haygood had one catch for 14 yards and Marin added two catches for 6 yards.

Bridgewater was led by Jamie Langley on the ground with 45 yards on 10 carries. Robert Matthews added 37 yards on six carries and Eric Spence finished with 32 yards on three rushes. Wakefield was 14-for-28 with one interception for 131 yards passing. Nicholas Lehto caught three balls for 38 yards, Devin Thornton caught two balls for 24 yards, and Douglas Napier had two catches for 22 yards.

The stat of the day was time of possession. The Captains had the ball for 36:18 compared to Bridgewater's 23:42.

Bridgewater falls to 3-1 and plays at Hampden-Sydney next week.
