For the 2002 season, the NCAA developed a index that allowed them to more easily calculate a team's strength of schedule and how a team performed against that schedule.
Please note: Although the NCAA calls this a strength of schedule index, it does not truly measure how strong the schedule is. It measures how a team performs. We do not endorse this as a way of measuring teams; we publish it only because it is a measure the NCAA uses.
This index covers only games played within a team's region, which includes anyone within the team's region as defined by the NCAA (see Team Pages on our menu rail) or any Division III playoff qualifier within 200 miles' driving distance from campus. It also only covers games played to date.
Points are assigned as follows:
A win on the road vs. a team at or above .667: 15 points
A win at home vs. a team at or above .667: 14 points
A win on the road vs. a team at or above .500, but below .667: 13 points
A win at home vs. a team at or above .500, but below .667: 12 points
A win on the road vs. a team at or above .333, but below .500: 11 points
A win at home vs. a team at or above .333, but below .500: 10 points
A win on the road vs. a team below .333: 9 points
A win at home vs. a team below .333: 8 points
A loss on the road vs. a team at or above .667: 7 points
A loss at home vs. a team at or above .667: 6 points
A loss on the road vs. a team at or above .500, but below .667: 5 points
A loss at home vs. a team at or above .500, but below .667: 4 points
A loss on the road vs. a team at or above .333, but below .500: 3 points
A loss at home vs. a team at or above .333, but below .500: 2 points
A loss on the road vs. a team below .333: 1 points
A loss at home vs. a team below .333: 0 points
These points are totaled, then divided by the number of regional games. A neutral game is treated as a road game for both teams. The game is evaluated based on the opponents' winning percentage at the time of the ranking, not at the time the game was played.
This measure is even more meaningless in September and early October, with the majority of the schedule yet to be played. Using this formula, we have calculated the current index for all Division III teams:
