WAUKESHA, Wis. - St. Norbert College turned in a dominating defensive effort to lead the way to a 27-7 win over Carroll University in a Midwest Conference game at Schneider Stadium. It was the Green Knights' 17th consecutive win in the series dating back to 1996.
St. Norbert (3-1, 3-0 MWC) forced nine Carroll punts and three turnovers while sacking quarterback Cody DiGiovanni six times. The Pioneers (2-2, 1-2 MWC) finished with 205 yards of total offense, 37 of which came in the last two minutes with the Green Knights holding a 20-point lead.
The Green Knights were nursing a 14-7 lead late in the game when they were stopped on downs at the Carroll 16-yard line with 3:36 remaining. Three plays later, Anthony Parker intercepted a DiGiovanni pass and had clear sailing for a 25-yard touchdown on the return for a 21-7 lead with 2:24 to go.
Three plays from scrimmage later, DiGiovanni was sacked deep inside Carroll territory by Brian Feltz and fumbled, with Max Pirman falling on the ball at the Carroll 1. James Tringali's 1-yard quarterback sneak with 2:06 left closed out the game.
St. Norbert opened the scoring late in the first quarter, mounting a nine-play, 55-yard drive. Brad Boockmeier's 1-yard run with 14 seconds left in the period put the Green Knights ahead 7-0.
Carroll answered early in the second quarter, needing seven plays to move 68 yards - but actually gaining 83 yards of total offense - to tie the score. DiGiovanni converted a third down by finding Andy Laurin for 37 yards to the St. Norbert 17, which led to Lamont Williams' 6-yard touchdown run with 7:08 left in the quarter.
The Green Knights then mounted their most impressive offensive series of the game, spending 6:30 to move 83 yards in 13 plays. St. Norbert converted two third downs to allow Boockmeier to scamper in from 12 yards out with 37 seconds left before halftime.
Boockmeier finished with 111 yards rushing on 29 carries and two touchdowns, and also had a team-high seven receptions for 55 yards. Tringali completed 23 of 34 passes for 226 yards. For the fourth consecutive game, St. Norbert did not commit a turnover.
Matt Petersilka finished with a team-high six tackles for St. Norbert's defense, which had six different players record a sack.
St. Norbert outgained Carroll 313-205, and had the ball for 36:10 to the Pioneers' 23:50. The Green Knights converted 7 of 15 third-down chances, while the Pioneers were just 2-for-11.
Williams led Carroll on the ground with 96 yards on 16 carries. DiGiovanni completed 8 of 21 passes for 88 yards with one interception.
