Tommies now 9-0, secure NCAA playoff spot

More news about: St. Thomas

Senior cornerback Michael Alada had his eighth and ninth interceptions of the season and also recovered a Gustavus fumble for a third takeaway in the No. 4-ranked Tommie Football's 40-6 road win over the Gusties in Saturday in MIAC play in St. Peter.

The Tommies (9-0 overall, 7-0 MIAC) secured at least a share of the conference championship with one game to go -- their fifth in the last seven seasons. That's the 401st regular-season MIAC championship for St. Thomas and fourth out of eight teams this fall season.

Coach Glenn Caruso's squad also locked up the conference's NCAA playoff berth making it seven postseason trips in the last eight seasons.

St. Thomas has won 22 consecutive regular-season games and 10 in a row on the road. The Toms made it nine wins in a row against Gustavus.

The St. Thomas defense had seven sacks among 10 tackles for loss, and limited Gustavus to a net 128 yards of offense. UST has allowed just one touchdown over its last 10 quarters and gave up only two field goals Saturday to Gustavus (4-5, 3-4).

Senior QB Alex Fenske threw four TD passes and 289 yards. Fenske's two-yard TD pass to Jackson Hull on the final play of the first half pushed the Tommie lead to 26-3.

Nick Waldvogel had 112 yards on eight catches; Tanner Vik had two catches for 70 yards; and Joe Reed added a 53-yard TD reception. Freshman halfback Josh Parks rushed for 74 yards in a rare start.

UST closes its regular season next Saturday at home against St. Olaf.
