Michael Green has been named Gettysburg's new head football coach, announced by athletic director Troy Dell on Monday.
Green spent the last 12 years on the coaching staff at Hobart, his alma mater, including the last five as defensive coordinator.
He replaces Maurice Banks, who was let go in mid-November. Banks was head coach for five seasons, compiling a record of 7-43. The Bullets defeated McDaniel in the final week of the season to finish the year 1-9 overall, 1-6 in Centennial Conference play.
"It is a tremendous honor to be the new head coach of Gettysburg football," Green said. "I want to thank president Bob Iuliano, vice president Rob Schwartz, and (athletic director) Troy Dell for their trust and belief in me. It was clear through the interview process that Gettysburg College has all the resources and support to build a successful football program. I am fired up to lead the Bullets into a new era and challenge our student-athletes to be great every day. It is a great day to be a Bullet!"
In his five seasons leading the Statesmen defense, he mentored 28 All-Liberty League selections, four all-region players, two D3football.com All-Americans, and two Liberty League Defensive Players of the Year. In each of the last two seasons, his unit has led the Liberty League in total defense. His 2025 group allowed just 271.9 yards per game, which ranked 30th in Division III, and surrendered 17 or fewer points in seven of the team's 11 games.
His 2024 defense was statistically one of the best in the 131-year history of Hobart football. Green's defense ranked in the top 25 nationally in seven statistical categories, including fourth in scoring defense (11.4 ppg) and sixth in defensive touchdowns (4). The defense set a Statesmen single-season record for fewest yards per completion allowed (9.5), yielded just five rushing touchdowns and gave up only 125 points on the season — the fewest points allowed since 2000. His defense produced eight all-conference honorees, including five linebackers.
"Michael has done a tremendous job here as an assistant coach and coordinator," Statesmen coach Kevin DeWall said. "From recruiting and coaching him during his career at Hobart to coaching alongside him on our staff, I'm grateful for Michael's commitment and investment in our program. His work ethic, drive, and positive influence on our campus community have been outstanding.
"We're excited for Michael and this opportunity at Gettysburg. His experiences here will serve him well as he transitions into this new role. They are getting a very good coach and an even better person."
"It's a bittersweet moment to move on from Hobart," Green said. "I've spent the last 15 years in Geneva as both a player and a coach, and the relationships and memories I've made here will stay with me for life. I thank Coach DeWall for his guidance in preparing me for this opportunity. My fiancée, Kayla, and I are excited for the next chapter in Gettysburg. Hobart will always mean a great deal to us."
In the precursor to that standout season, the Statesmen finished in the top 25 in Division III in pass efficiency defense (10th), defensive touchdowns (12th), scoring defense (14th) and passing yards allowed (25th). Hobart led the Liberty League in defensive touchdowns, fumbles recovered, and sacks, while ranking second in total defense, scoring defense, and pass efficiency defense. That came a year after Green built the No. 1 red-zone defense in the nation (48 percent), and the 18th-ranked defense in opponent fourth-down conversion. The Statesmen defense held three teams to single digits, including a shutout against St. John Fisher.
"We are pleased to have Michael join the Bullets staff as our new head football coach," Dell said. "He is a proven coach and recruiter, who has been a part of a highly successful program. The work he has done on both sides of the ball — with his most recent leadership of the defense at Hobart—has been a large part of that program's success. I am confident he will do great work as our head coach."
An offensive lineman during his playing days, Green began his coaching career in 2014, mentoring two All-Americans on the Hobart offensive line, including Ali Marpet, who was later drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round and started at left guard in the Bucs' Super Bowl LV Championship. Hobart ranked sixth in the nation in fewest sacks allowed and fewest tackles for loss allowed that season.
Following a promotion in 2015, Green spent the next six seasons as Hobart's full-time offensive line coach. He oversaw the development of 18 all-conference linemen. He also spent three seasons as the team's academic success coordinator, guiding 52 Statesmen to the Liberty League All-Academic Team, as well as eight Academic All-District honorees.
In Green's 15 seasons with Hobart, the Statesmen had a winning season each year. His Hobart teams went 34-8 in his four years as a player with three Liberty League championships and three straight NCAA appearances that included a trip to the national quarterfinals in 2012.
