BANGOR, Maine - The Adrian College football team opened the 2011 season in historic fashion on Friday night (Sept. 2) with a 77-7 win over Husson University. The 77 points scored are the most in school history as the Bulldogs scored 11 touchdowns (6 passing, 5 rushing) and racked up 667 total yards while holding the Eagles to 113 total yards, including 14 in the first half.
Freshman running back Ce'Juwon McFerrin had a debut to remember with three rushing touchdowns in the first half. McFerrin finished the game with nine carries for 58 yards. He scampered five yards and two yards in the first quarter to stake Adrian to a 21-0 lead. He also scored with 4:22 left in the second quarter to help AC take a 49-0 lead into halftime.
Junior quarterback Brandon Miller also had a stellar debut with the Bulldogs. Miller completed 16-of-23 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns. He tossed his first two touchdowns to Mitch Gabriele and also tossed a 48-yarder to Justin Hemm and a 48-yarder to Danny Cobb. Gabriele finished with nine catches for 109 yards to lead the team in both categories. Hemm had four catches for 89 yards.
Shuan Hladki and D'ante Thompson also caught TD passes in the second half from freshman Aaron Tenney. Hladki caught a 56-yard bomb midway through the third quarter and Thompson caught an 11-yard fade route with 11:48 left in the game. Tenney finished 2-of-4 for 67 yards.
The defense was led by junior Chris Janes with seven tackles and a fumble recovery. Joe Makowski had a pair of sacks for a loss of 20 yards and tallied four tackles. Bryan Garbarino had a pair of assisted tackles and a 14-yard interception return. The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Defiance College. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. against the Yellow Jackets.
