More news about: Pacific Lutheran

MOORPARK, Calif. - Cal Lutheran rolled up 552 yards of total offense Saturday afternoon on the way to a 28-17 non-conference football win over the visiting Pacific Lutheran Lutes at Moorpark College's Griffin Stadium.

The Kingsmen, who improved to 1-1 this season, broke away from a 7-3 halftime lead with 21 third-quarter points before surrendering a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to the Lutes, also 1-1 this season.

Cal Lutheran rushed for 281 net rushing yards, including Daniel Mosier's 166 on 16 carries. Mosier averaged 10.4 yards per carry and scored on touchdown runs of one yard in the opening quarter and two yards in the third period. D. Chambers scored the other rushing touchdown from two yards and also had 68 net yards on 15 carries.

Kingsmen quarterback Jake Laudenslayer was 13-for-23 for 271 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. His 70-yard scoring strike to Frankie Jones capped CLU's scoring in the third period and gave the hosts a 28-3 lead.

After falling behind 7-0 in the early going, the Lutes closed the first half with an amazing 18-play, 77-yard scoring drive capped by Nick Kaylor's 37-yard field goal. Senior quarterback Zack Halverson added fourth quarter touchdown passes of 42 yards to Alex McDiarmid and two yards to Daniel Herr.

The Lutes accumulated 301 yards of total offense, including 82 rushing yards on 20 carries by Brandon James. Halverson was 23-for-38 passing for 240 yards, the two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Halverson has not thrown an interception in PLU's first two games.

Herr, a freshman wide receiver playing his first college game, led the Lutes with five catches for 43 yards. McDiarmid had four receptions for 64 yards, James had four for 46 yards, and Tyler Bowen added four more catches for 43 yards.

Sophomore safety Sean McFadden had nine tackles, including a tackle for loss, and an interception to lead the PLU defense. Justin Whitman added six tackles from his cornerback spot.

PLU has next Saturday off before opening Northwest Conference play on Oct. 1 when it hosts the Puget Sound Loggers.
