Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw's Amen Galley rushed for a career-high 109 yards and the defense recorded the program's first shutout since 2009 as the Tigers blanked visiting Kenyon, 24-0, on a warm autumn afternoon on Mourouzis Field.
The Tigers improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while the Lords dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
DePauw scored on its first possession of the game as Galley carried six times for 37 yards including the final two yards for the score with 7:04 left in the quarter. The series was costly, however, as senior receiver D.J. Steward left the field on a stretcher after the third play.
Kenyon fumbled in DePauw territory, but the Tigers couldn't capitalize and the teams exchanged four punts each before DePauw started at its own 45 with 1:26 left in the half.
After running for three yards on first down, Matt Hunt connected with Jack Hagan for a 17-yard gain on third down and then again for two yards on the next play. A 13-yard pass play to Galley moved the ball to the Kenyon 20 and gave DePauw another first down.
Hunt rushed for six on second down and tossed an apparent scoring pass to Brandon Lugar but it was called back due to an ineligible receiver. Faced with a third-and-nine situation, the Tigers called timeout and Hunt again teamed with Hagan for a 13-yard gain to the Kenyon 6.
With the clock winding down, Hunt tossed a 6-yard strike to Hagan with 3.9 seconds remaining in the half. The touchdown was the first of Hagan's college career. Marko Adams booted the point-after to make it 14-0.
On their second series of the third, DePauw again started on its own 45 and Galley got the call five straight times and drove to the Lords' 19. Following a timeout, Jack Gruber scampered to the end zone for his first collegiate score.
The Lords drove into the red zone on their next possession, but Blake Calcei fumbled on third and 1 and Thomas Gray recovered for the Tigers at the DePauw 5. Hunt connected with a long ball to Connor Jeffers on third down that covered 77 yards to the Kenyon 11 on the final play of the third.
Hunt was whistled for intentional grounding on third and six and that moved the Tigers out of field goal range and they decided to punt. On the first play following the punt, Kenyon quarterback Jake Bates was intercepted by Hamm Hooperand the Tigers took over on the Lords 21.
DePauw needed eight plays before Adams nailed a 28-yard field goal for the game's final points.
Kenyon drove to the DePauw 26, but Joel Borders sacked Bates on first down and three straight incomplete passes followed.
Galley's 109 rushing yards came on 25 attempts and was his first 100-yard collegiate effort. Gruber added 56 in 10 carries as the Tigers totaled 169 on the afternoon. Hunt completed 12 of 26 for 188 yards with five going to Hagan which also were the first five of his college career.
Calcei paced Kenyon with 42 rushing yards on nine carries, while Bates completed 16 of 30 passes for 97 yards. His top target was Ian Bell with six catches for 35 yards.
Defensively, Adam Folta and Will Longthorne each totaled 10 tackles, while Cody Baker added seven. Bandon Byrd paced Kenyon with 12 stops.
DePauw hosts Denison next Saturday in a 2 p.m. Old Gold Day contest.
