Struggles Continue For Washington U. In 50-20 Loss At Centre

Danville, Ky., Sept. 27, 2014 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team struggled on both sides of the ball in a 50-20 loss at Centre College Saturday afternoon at Farris Stadium in Danville. Centre remains undefeated at 4-0 with the win, while Washington U. drops to 1-3.

Centre had the 483-219 advantage in total offense, limiting Washington University to a season-low 40 rushing yards on 37 carries. Washington U.'s defense allowed 239 yards rushing, including 101 yards and three TDs by Nolan Coulter. Centre QB Heath Haden was 15-of-19 for 244 yards and three touchdowns.

Trailing 21-0 midway through the second quarter, Washington U. converted a fake punt after senior quarterback Alex Hodakowskicompleted a 32-yard pass to junior running back Cody Ratermann. Seven plays later, Ratermann scored from two yards out to trim the lead to 20-7 with 8:34 to play before half.

Centre tacked on nine more points to extend the lead to 29-7 after a safety and a 13-yard pass from Haden to Blake Martin. The Bears added a field goal as time expired after junior kicker Alex Hallwachs connected from 51 yards out. The field goal was the second longest in school history.

Haden tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter in a span of 68 seconds to extend Centre's lead to 43-10. He found Brandon Kamp open for a five-yard TD pass, and then connected with Kurt Wilhelmus on a five-yard TD with 8:31 to play. Hallwachs connected from 26 yards and then Hodakowski added a one-yard TD run with 2:31 to play to round out the scoring.

Hodakowski was the lone bright spot on offense completing 6-of-10 passes for 97 yards. Senior quarterback Sam Van Doren struggled in his second career start completing 11-of-29 passes for 66 yards and an interception.

Junior punter Alec Stanke punted seven times for an average of 49.3, and had a career-long punt of 65 yards in the fourth quarter. Senior linebacker Fade Oluokun had nine tackles, one tackle for loss and a forced fumble to lead the defensive unit. Freshman defensive lineman Garris Goe added two sacks in the loss.

Washington U. closes out a two-game road trip at Berry College. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. (ET) in Mount Berry, Ga.
