Nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College racked up 533 yards of total offense, while the defense allowed just 201 yards, as the Cardinals cruised to a 42-7 win over host Utica College on Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference.
With the win, Fisher, ranked 16th nationally, improves to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Utica falls to 4-3, 2-2.
Six different players scored for Fisher, as the Cardinals gained 338 yards on the ground on just 43 attempts.
Freshman Tony Fusco rushed 61 yards on the first play from scrimmage and just three plays later, quarterback Tyler Fenti connected with Nathan Nigolian for a 13-yard strike to put Fisher up for good less than three minutes into the game.
Fisher pushed its lead to 21-0 at the half. Fenti scored on a 32-yard run midway through the second quarter and James Chambers scored on a a 16-yard run with just over one minute left in the half.
Fenti gained 59 yards on just three carries for the game, while Chambers finished with 81 yards on just nine attempts.
After stopping Utica on fourth down at the Fisher 28 on the opening drive of the second half, the Cardinals marched 72 yards on eight plays with Fusco scoring from one yard out. Fusco finished the day with 145 yards on just 14 carries.
On Fisher's next drive, Mike Collichio scored on a 6-yard pass from Fenti, ending an eight-play, 78-yard drive. Fenti finished the day completing 15-of-21 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Sophomore running back Chris Smith closed out the scoring with a one-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Eric Riley's 45-yard reception highlighted the 57-yard drive.
The Fisher defense lost its shutout bid late in the fourth quarter for the second straight game, as Utica scored on a 40-yard pass with 4:01 left in the game.
Brandon Miller led the Fisher defense, racking up a career-high 17 tackles, including six stops for losses. Fisher held Utica to just 29 rushing yards on 26 attempts. Fisher's secondary – led by Anthony Lee, Alec Mortillaro and Bryant Moore – held Utica's Anthony Acevedo, last year's Empire 8 Co-Offensive Player of the Year, to just five catches for 22 yards.
Greg Lohrman was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra point attempts.
Fisher returns to action at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Alfred State College.
