Big third quarter leads Coe past Simpson

More news about: Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa – Josh Rekers threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns, Sam Lahr ran for 94 and a score and Coe beat the Simpson football team 35-21 on Saturday.

Simpson came back from 14 down in the first half to tie the score at halftime, but Coe scored 21 straight to open the third quarter, spoiling homecoming at Buxton Stadium.

Rekers went 21 of 31 without an interception, accounting for all three third quarter touchdowns for the Kohawks (3-3, 2-1 Iowa Conference). He tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Nicholas Lenstra, an 18-yard pass to Dan Kopp and plunged in from a yard out with 2:04 left to give Coe a 35-14 lead.

"You have to take advantage of the opportunities you have offensively, defensively and on special teams, and we didn't today," head coach Jim Glogowski said.

Dylan Berkey threw for 190 yards and a touchdown and Walker Holland made eight catches for 112 yards and a 55-yard touchdown for the Storm (3-3, 0-3), who dropped their third straight.

"You can't turn the ball over and you can't miss on opportunities," Glogowski said. "A couple of times the ball was on the ground for them and we didn't seem to get it. That seems to be the problem the last couple of weeks; we haven't been able to get those turnovers when we've needed to defensively and we've turned it over too much on offense."

Simpson's first turnover of the day, a fumble, gave Coe a short field for its second touchdown and a 14-0 lead. The second turnover was an interception in the third quarter that cut off a promising drive in Coe territory.

Simpson's defense, on the other hand, created three fumbles but recovered just one, thanks to a muffed punt.

"Football is a funny game, there's a lot of things you can blame [a losing streak] on," Glogowski said. "We have to coach better, we have to play better, we have to execute better and we can't beat ourselves."

Coming off a 44-10 loss to Dubuque a week ago, Simpson surrendered a pair of early touchdowns to Coe, going down 14-0 when Lenstra scored from 5 yards out with 11:51 to play in the second quarter.

Simpson fought back into the game, scoring two touchdowns in the final 3:58 before halftime on a pair of gutsy, 4th-down conversions. Ethan Calvert dove in from a yard out on 4th-and-goal and Berkey made a highlight-reel, 18-yard scramble on 4th-and-4 that saw him cut all the way across the field before reaching the endzone.

Simpson's momentum quickly evaporated when Rekers found Lenstra running free down the visitor sideline for a 50-yard touchdown on the first drive of the third quarter.

Down 35-14, Berkey found Holland on a 55-yard post route to get within two touchdowns as time expired in the third quarter.

Both of Simpson's fourth quarter possessions ended on 4th-down incompletions.

Brandon Abernathy made a career-high 16 tackles to lead the Simpson defense. Shane Venteicherhad 12 and Simpson tallied eight tackles for loss and three sacks on the day.
