ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – The Shenandoah University football team is 2-0 for the first time in program history thanks to a 42-27 non-league win over Ferrum College Saturday afternoon.
Playing at Franklin County (Va.) High School due to construction on Ferrum's home field, the Hornets (2-0) won their third straight game in the longtime series with its former USA South Conference rivals on the strength of a strong offensive performance.
Head coach Scott Yoder, who earned his 10th career win as SU head coach, saw his offense throw for a program record 355 yards and 481 yards of total offense in the win over Ferrum (0-2).
Freshman quarterback Hayden Bauserman did most of that damage by completing 16 of 19 attempts for 290 yards and four touchdowns.
Bauserman had touchdown throws of 26, 25, 8 and 59 yards before taking the final three series of the game off.
His final TD throw, the 59-yard strike to Jalen Brisco, gave SU a 35-20 lead.
Delaun Richardson then put the Hornets up 42-20 by capping a six-play, 68-yard drive with a 7-yard TD run with 8:52 to play.
Ferrum answered with a four-play, 67-yard drive that took just 51 seconds to make it 42-27 with 4:08 remaining, but could get no closer.
Junior Cedrick Delaney gave the Hornets the lead for good by finishing off a nine-play, 70-yard drive with a two-yard TD plunge with 2:46 remaining in the first half.
Delaney, who had 238 yards in total offense, accounted for all but 15 yards of that scoring drive.
The Panthers gained 385 yards of their own on offense, including 247 on the ground with their option attack.
Quarterback Troy Helton had 22 carries for 154 yards and another 75 yards passing, but ended the game on the bench as backup Anthony Merritt threw for 63 yards on three completions in six fourth quarter attempts.
Linebackers Michael Messick, Micheal Wroble and Malik Sims led the Hornets defense with 31 combined stops; Messick had 10 solo tackles among his 17 total stops.
Safety Cedrick Bridges had a second half interception as well.
"I thought the balanced offensive effort was tremendous," Yoder said. "It helped the defense get our feet underneath ourselves and adjust to the option.
"Hayden (Bauserman) had an excellent day and Jalen Brisco made some huge plays downfield."
Brisco had a co-game-high five receptions for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
Tight end Miles Green also had five catches with Deshon Brown adding four receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Shenandoah completes non-conference play at N.C. Wesleyan next Saturday.
