William Paterson Football Can’t Get by Frostburg State, 37-19

More news about: William Paterson

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (1-4, 0-4 NJAC) dropped a 37-19 decision to visiting Frostburg State (4-1, 3-1 NJAC) as the Pioneers celebrated Homecoming Oct. 10.

A bad snap on a punt attempt allowed the Bobcats to start their second drive of the game inside the WP 20-yard line, and Frostburg State took advantage by kicking a 32-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead 11:27 into the contest. A 41-yard Jordan Brown run and an Isaac Robinson PAT extended the advantage to 10-0 two plays into the second quarter.

A 34-yard pass from senior quarterback Anthony DiMarsico (Stony Point, N.Y./Suffern) to senior wide receiver Nick Burke (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) made it first-and-goal at the FSU-10, and three plays later DiMarsico and Burke connected again, this time for a three-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked, making it a 10-6 game with 11:32 remaining in the first half.

After a defensive penalty on the final play of the half, Robinson was granted a second chance at a field-goal attempt, splitting the uprights with no time remaining from 25 yards out and handing the Bobcats a 13-6 edge heading into the locker room.

On the second play of the second half, junior defensive back Corey Morris (Linden, N.J./Long Branch) scooped up a Frostburg fumble and ran it back 15 yards for the touchdown. Freshman Nick DeAngelis (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) kicked the extra point and the game was tied at 13-13 at the 14:06 mark.

Freshman quarterback Connor Cox found senior wide receiver Myles Burgess for a 43-yard score (20-13, 11:35), and after a Pioneer fumble of the ensuing kickoff, Frostburg State made it a 27-13 game thanks to a 13-yard Cox scramble with 10:29 to play in the third quarter.

Cox tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to Burgess to open the fourth quarter (34-13, 11:17), and Robinson kicked a 25-yard field goal four minutes later (37-13, 7:30).

William Paterson finished the scoring with a 65-yard catch and run by junior running back Malcolm Robinson (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) with 52 seconds left.

DiMarsico was 9-for-26 for 192 yards, two touchdowns and one interception under center. Senior running back Matt Deiana (Somers, N.Y./Somers) carried 13 times for 82 yards, and Burke caught three passes for 55 yards and a score. Robinson finished with 73 yards and one touchdown on two receptions.

Senior linebacker Carlo Caponetta (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) led the team with nine tackles, junior defensive back Pat Moran (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) had eight stops, and senior linebacker Dennis Goodman (Somerset, N.J./Bishop Ahr) and sophomore linebacker Charles Faulkner (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) each posted seven tackles.

Cox finished 13-for-16 for 142 yards and two touchdowns for Frostburg State, and also rushed 11 times for 61 yards and a score. Burgess hauled in four passes for 56 yards and two TDs.

Senior linebacker Rowan Pinkett paced the Bobcat defense with eight tackles, while junior defensive lineman William Sewell posted seven stops and a blocked PAT.

William Paterson will visit Salisbury Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1:00 p.m.
