KING'S FOOTBALL FALLS TO 14TH RANKED DELAWARE VALLEY
WILKES-BARRE -- Murphy's Law states that when "anything that can go wrong, it will go wrong." That adage certainly applied to the King's College football team on Saturday in a 49-14 Middle Atlantic Conference loss to 14th ranked Delaware Valley University at McCarthy Stadium.
In the final statistics, King's managed just 125 yards of total offense, committed two turnovers and had 10 penalties for 76 lost yards, but numerous other mistakes crippled any chance the Monarchs had to compete with the powerful Aggies.
After King's threw an interception on the first possession of the game, Delaware Valley moved 37 yards on five plays to find the end zone on a five-yard run by Robert Cleveland.
After King's punted from deep in its own territory on the next possession, the Aggies used a 10-play, 42-yard drive to score on a two-yard pass from Dashawn Darden to Mike Jenson to build a 14-0 lead with 5:21 left in the first quarter.
After a King's three-and-out, Delaware Valley went 55 yards on 15 plays to find paydirt on a one-yard run by Devauntay Ellis, upping the lead to 21-0 with 12:39 left in the second quarter.
The Monarchs fared no better on its next drive when Zach Whitehead threw his second interception of the game to Nick Wright at the King's 38. The Aggies added to the lead when Darden found Jensen for a 24-yard touchdown pass to stretch the lead to 28-0 with 9:30 to go in the half.
King's was again forced to punt in its own territory and a high snap sailed over the head of Monarch punter Eric Haenggi, who recovered the loose ball at the 12-yard line to again set up the Aggies.
It took three plays for Delaware Valley to reach the end zone, this time on a 13-yard run by Cleveland, pushing the score to 35-0 with 5:56 on the clock.
After another King's punt, the Aggies assumed possession at their own 23 and used nine plays to march 77 yards before scoring on a one-yard Ellis run with 0:01 left as Delaware Valley forged a 42-0 halftime lead.
The Aggies amassed 269 first half yards compared to just eight for the Monarchs.
Delaware Valley took the second-half kickoff and went 64 yards on nine plays to score on a two-yard run by Tyler Bing to extend the lead to 49-0.
King's finally got on the board with 6:04 left in the third quarter when the Monarchs drove 41 yards after an Aggie punt to score on a nine-yard pass from Whitehead to Mike Palmer. The Monarchs added the final score of the game with a seven-play, 72 yard drive, capped by a three-yard run by Alvonte Thompson to set the final score.
Delaware Valley outgained King's 440-125 for the game and had 28 first downs compared to 10 for the Monarchs. Whitehead was 11-of-24 for 91 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Tyler Marroni had three catches for 40 yards while Thompson ran for 45 yards on six attempts.
For the Aggies, Darden was 11-of-19 for 121 yards and two scores while, Cleveland rushed for 71 yards on 12 carries. Eric Shorter had four catches for 21 yards while Jensen finished with three receptions for 41 yards and two scores.
Bruce Damon led King's with 17 tackles while Jake Manetti followed with nine stops.
King's returns to the field Saturday when the Monarchs host Lebanon Valley College at 1:00 p.m. on Homecoming.
