Frostburg Wins Fifth-Straight

More news about: Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg jumped out to a 17-0 lead and the Bobcat defense held a high powered Christopher Newport offense in check as they earned a 17-6 win over the Captains, Saturday at a windy Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcats (6-1, 5-1 NJAC) won for the fifth-straight time this fall and they entered the weekend in a five-way tie for first place in the NJAC standings. The victory for Frostburg knocked CNU (5-2, 4-2) out of the five-way tie and FSU is now locked at the top with rival-Salisbury and Wesley. Rowan, who lost to Wesley 24-17 earlier this afternoon and CNU are in second.

The win over the Captains handed the Bobcats a five-game winning streak for the second-straight season and the victory improves FSU's record to 4-0 at home this season. In those four wins, the Bobcats are outscoring their opponents 95-24.

The Bobcat defense entered the contest with Christopher Newport ranked 11th in the nation in total defense and Frostburg held CNU to just 269 yards in offense and forced two turnovers.

Frostburg held the Captains scoreless until the fourth quarter when CNU marched 75 yards on 10 plays for its only touchdown. It was the visitors 10th possession of the game and quarterback K.J. Kearney ran for an 11-yard touchdown to narrow the deficit to 17-6.

The late score temporarily gave the Captains some momentum, but senior Matt Capozza intercepted Kearny on the next possession and CNU turned the ball over on downs deep inside its own end with 3:11 to play.

Junior Dre'Quan Reed led Frostburg with nine tackles, one for loss and one sack. Freshman Graylin Walker, junior Josh Washington and senior Will Sewell each added eight tackles.

On offense, Cox tallied 135 yards in offense and two scores. He threw for 111 yards on 9-of-13 passing and ran for another 24 yards.

Cox opened the scoring with a three-yard jolt midway through the first quarter. Frostburg took over at its own 47 and moved the 53 yards in five minutes for a 7-0 lead.

The Bobcats tacked on three more points late in the first quarter. Senior Isaac Robinson connected on a season-long 47 yard field goal for a 10-0 advantage.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Bobcats made it 17-0 early in the third. Sophomore Jamaal Morant ran for 16 yards on second down and Cox found junior wideout Russell Neverdon for 11 yards to the CNU 36. Two plays later, Cox and Neverdon connected on a 37-yard touchdown reception for the 17-0 advantage.

Neverdon totaled over 100 yards receiving for the second time in three games as he finished with 107 yards on seven catches and a touchdown. Morant ran for 74 yards on 33 carries.

Frostburg hosts Rowan next Saturday at 1:00 pm.
