Defense, Special Teams Carry Frostburg To Seventh-Straight Win

More news about: Frostburg State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Frostburg State collected its seventh-consecutive victory on Saturday with a 24-6 win over Montclair State and it was the Bobcat defense and special teams that provided the biggest plays of the game.

The Bobcat defense limited Montclair to 78 yards in total offense, minus eight rushing yards, intercepted three passes and Frostburg held John DiStefano, the NJAC's leading rusher, to just 15 yards on 14 carries.

Meanwhile, the Bobcat special teams unit blocked a punt and recovered the ball in Montclair's end zone for a touchdown and senior Isaac Robinson connected on his fourth field goal of over 40 yards this season.

The victory improves Frostburg's overall record to 8-1 on the season, the program's best record since the 1993 team opened at 8-1. The same year marked the last time the Bobcats collected a seven-game winning streak.

The win also keeps Frostburg in a tie for first place in the NJAC standings. Entering today's action, Frostburg was in a three-way tie at the top, but Wesley defeated Salisbury 44-27, dropping the Sea Gulls from the three-way tie. Both Frostburg and Wesley are 7-1 in the league.

Sophomore quarterback Connor Cox and sophomore tight end Christian DiPaola connected for the game's first touchdown at 8:03 in the first. The Bobcats took over deep inside Montclair territory after MSU mishandled a punt snap. Sophomore Jamaal Morant ran three times for 15 yards before Cox found DiPaola for a one-yard touchdown toss for a 7-0 lead.

On Montclair's ensuing possession, the Frostburg special teams unit came through for the second touchdown of the afternoon at 6:22.

On fourth and 22 for from the Red Hawk seven, Frostburg senior defensive back Thomas Moore blocked a Curtis Pendleto punt that was recovered in the end zone by freshman Malik Morris for a 14-0 lead.

The hosts answered with 5:28 left in the second quarter. Cox was sacked and stripped of the football at the Frostburg 38 and the ball was picked up and returned for a score by Montclair's Nick Catalano to cut the deficit to 14-6.

Early in the third quarter, senior defensive back Matt Capozza setup Frostburg's third touchdown of the game. He stepped in front of a John Apicella pass at the MSU 30 and Capozza returned it to the 27. On the very next play, Cox threw a 27-yard touchdown strike to junior wide receiver Russell Neverdon for a 21-6 advantage.

Robinson capped the game's scoring when he tacked on three more points with a 40-yard field goal with 4:36 remaining in the third quarter. It is his third-straight game with a field goal of 40 yards or longer and is his fourth-straight made FG.

Cox finished with 117 yards passing on 13-of-23 attempts with two passing TDs. Neverdon hauled in five passes for 69 yards and a score, while Morant ran for 56 yards on 15 carries.

Senior William Sewell paced the bobcat defense with five tackles, 2.0 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. Freshman Graylin Walker added five tackles, including 1.0 tackle for loss and junior Niles Scott had five stops, including 1.5 TFLs and a sack.

Frostburg wraps up its regular season next Saturday when it hosts Salisbury in the 18th Annual Regents Cup at 1:00 pm.
