#11 Bobcats Roll In NJAC Opener

More news about: Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – Eleventh-ranked Frostburg State opened up a 28-0 lead en route to a 49-14 win over The College of New Jersey, Saturday in the NJAC opener for both schools.

The win is the 11th straight for Frostburg dating back to week three of last season and the Bobcats (2-0, 1-0 NJAC) have won their last nine league games.

FSU overpowered the Lions (0-2, 0-1 NJAC) from the very start as freshman Chad Gleason took the game's first punt 77 yards for a touchdown and a quick 7-0 lead just 1:37 into action.

Frostburg tacked on three more touchdowns and jumped out to a 28-0 cushion before TCNJ even crossed the 50-yard line.

The Bobcats' first offensive play was just as impressive as Gleason's return. After the defense forced another three-and-out, junior Connor Cox found sophomore Malik Morris for a 54-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead.

On Frostburg's third possession, junior Grayson Boyce scampered up the middle while shedding tacklers for a 49-yard TD run and a 21-0 lead.

The fourth possession for Frostburg resulted in another touchdown and a 28-0 lead as Cox found junior Christian DiPaola up the visitor sideline early in the second for an 18-yard pitch-and-catch.

TCNJ finally moved into Bobcat territory on its fifth possession and Trevor Osler scored from four yards out to make it 28-7.

Boyce capped the first half scoring when he found the endzone from three yards out for his fifth touchdown of the season and a 35-7 advantage at the break.

Frostburg racked up 260 yards in offense during the first two quarters, while the FSU defense held the Lions to 99 passing yards and nine rushing yards.

In the third quarter, junior Jamaal Morant sandwiched a pair of rushing touchdowns around a TD from TCNJ.

Morant scored from a yard out early in the third and from six yards out late in the third. Vincent Guckin caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Osler with 2:39 showing for TCNJ's second score of the afternoon.

The Frostburg offense finished with 466 yards, behind 322 through the air. The Bobcat defense held the Lions to 265 yards in total offense and just 71 on the ground.

Cox finished the afternoon with 274 passing yards on 15-of-21 attempts and two touchdowns. Freshmen T.J. Peer and Desmond Colby each threw for 24 yards in the second half.

Morris hauled in six passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, while DiPaola finished with 76 yards receiving on four catches. Senior Russell Neverdon pulled down three passes for 96 yards.

Senior Josh Scales led the defensive effort with seven tackles, while sophomore Michael Bell made five stops, with two tackles for loss and a sack.

Frostburg returns to action next Saturday with a road contest at Christopher Newport at 7:00 pm.
