No. 6 Brockport posts statement win over Hobart, 56-7

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 6 College at Brockport football team posted a decisive win to open the 2018 season at home, bypassing Hobart College 56-7.

The Golden Eagles improve to 1-0 to start their 2018 campaign, while the Statesmen fall to 0-1 to open their season.

Head coach Jason Mangone's squad was firing on all cylinders, with the Brockport offense shining while the defensive unit put on a show of their own right. The Green and Gold produced 517 total yards of offense, with 373-yards through the air, with a staggering completion percentage of 90 percent (27-for-30). The Golden Eagle defense held their opponents to just five-yards rushing, and to a mere 124 yards of total offense.

Brockport came out of the gate determined, putting on a defensive clinic, holding Hobart scoreless through the first half. The Green and Gold opened the game off strong, with a Joe Germinierio connection to Alex Benson for a 77-yard touchdown just 17 seconds into the contest to take an early 7-0 lead.

Germinerio would continue to shine, going a perfect 12-for-12 in completions in the first quarter, leading Brockport on two more scoring drives to post a 21-0 lead at the first break. The passing game didn't let up, as the Golden Eagles continued to pour on the scoring, opening the second quarter with a scoring drive that featured a 57-yard completion from Germinerio to DaQuan Hubbard, capped by an 11-yard completion to Tyree Brown for the touchdown and the 28-0 lead.

Brockport added a pair of scores before the end of the half. The first a product of a four-play, 70-year drive where Germinerio found Hubbard for the 27-yard touchdown. The defense did their part to add to the Brockport lead, posting a pick-six to end the half, when Matt Artita returned an interception to the house to boast a 42-0 lead at the break.

The domination continued in the second half, as Brockport tacked on another seven points following a 13-play, 70-yard drive where Zach Samborski found the end zone, and Dustin Moyle's extra point was true for the 49-0 lead. The Statesmen posted their lone score of the day in the third quarter, using a four-minute drive to work into the end zone and onto the scoreboard.

Jala Coad started the Golden Eagles final scoring drive, picking up a 28-yard run to jump start a six-play, 52-yard drive that would end in a Joe Benedict TD to post a 56-7 lead that would stand through the remainder of regulation, securing the season opening victory.

Germinerio led the offense, completing 24-of-27 passes on the day for 343-yards and three touchdowns. On the receiving end, Hubbard was a favorite target, picking up eight catches for 135-yards. Benson added 99-yards on three catches, with Brown picking up eight catches as well, for 69-yards. On the ground, Samborski led the charge, with 10 rushes for 59-yards. Justin Morrison wasn't far behind, with 13 rushing attempts for 56-yards.

Defensively, the Green and Gold were led by Tim Terry, who racked up eight tackles including two for a loss of four-yards. Lawrence Jenkins and Matt Szymanski each accounted for six tackles each, while Szymanski added a tackle for loss. In addition to his two interceptions, Matt Arita added a pair of pass breakups to his three tackles.

The Golden Eagles will open the road portion of their schedule for week two, when the Green and Gold head to Ithaca College for a matchup on Sept. 8 with opening kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
