Junior Michael Pina scored five touchdowns (three rush, two pass) in Nichols College's 35-14 win over Anna Maria College Friday night in non-conference football action at Vendetti Field.
Sophomore Joshua Pierre-Charles rushed for 129 yards for the Bison (1-1), who compiled 429 yards of total offense in their first win of the season. Senior Eric Mooney was the top receiver for the Bison, hauling in four receptions for 85 yards.
Nichols opened the scoring 1:15 into the contest when Pina connected with Mooney for a 52-yard scoring strike. Pina then found freshman Hunter Ferreira from 24 yards out early in the second to extend the lead to 14-0.
Leading 14-7 midway through the third quarter, Pina capped a nine-play, 73-yard drive with a six-yard touchdown run to put NC back up by two scores. In the fourth, he scored on runs of eight and 10 yards, respectively, to help seal with win.
Defensively, senior captain McCoy Scott and junior Christopher Lawrence led Nichols with 10 tackles each while junior Jared Abbruzzese tied a program-record with three interceptions. Sophomore Gustavo Munoz and freshman Joe Cox each recorded a sack for the Bison.
Three things you need to know
-Tonight's contest marked the fourth all-time meeting with Anna Maria. The Bison are now a perfect 4-0 against the AMCats.
-Anna Maria freshman signal caller Alex Cohen completed 13-of-25 pass attempts for 209 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions.
-Senior Jacob Duffrene scampered for 75 yards on just 10 carries for Nichols (7.5 ypc).
"Jared worked very hard this offseason and bounced back after a tough opener to have a record-breaking performance. Offensively, running back is one of our deepest positions, so we were able to throw a fresh back at them almost every drive. Jake Wood, Jacob Duffrene, and Josh all did a great job tonight, and then when they tried to take that away, Mike made all the right run reads. The starting o-linemen all deserve credit tonight - Hunter Walker, Sam Gallant, Malakai Holan, Ronnie Joseph, and Brandon Grzyb. They were exceptional." -Nichols head coach Dale Olmsted
