More news about: Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Michael Goldsworthy had three interceptions leading Coast Guard to a 15-0 win over Maine Maritime in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game in front of packed house on Homecoming Weekend.

Goldsworthy is the first Coast Guard player to intercept three passes in a game since Mark Behne did so in 2015 against Maine Maritime.

Coast Guard improves to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC while the Mariners drop to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Bears travel to MIT, the only unbeaten left in the NEWMAC, next week for a noon kickoff on Saturday.

The only scoring in the first three quarters was a safety by Coast Guard when Maine Maritime had a bad snap on a punt and junior quarterback Zackery Brannon fell on it in the end zone with 1:50 left in the first half.

Senior Cole Austin missed a 35-yard field goal attempt with 12:57 left in the half that had kept the game scoreless.

Coast Guard had 100 total yards in the first half, 55 passing and 45 rushing while the Mariners were held to 60 total yards, 56 of those on the ground.

Maine Maritime had an opportunity to take the lead when Coast Guard had a bad snap on a punt and the Mariners got the ball at the Bears 26 yard line with 6:32 left in the third, but the Bears defense forced allowed them just one yard on the four plays.

The Bears finally found the end zone with 9:41 left in the game on a 1-yard run by sophomore Chris Gardner to cap a 7 play, 36 yard drive and following Austin's PAT the Bears led 9-0.

Coast Guard put the game away as they took over at the Maine Maritime 42 yard line following a punt and sophomore Justin Moffatt ran a sweep 42 yards for a touchdown on the first play, the two-point pass was failed after a missed kick and the Bears led 15-0 with 5:56 left.

The Bears would finish with 246 yards of total offense (168 passing and 78 rushing) while holding Maine Maritime to just 125 yards, 102 of those rushing.

Gardner led the Bears with 22 carries for 78 yards and a score while Moffatt had a game-high six receptions and 43 yards in the win.

Jones was 13 of 30 for 78 yards with one interception for Coast Guard.

Brannon was 10 of 28 for 23 yards with three interceptions and led the team with 17 carries for 92 yards.

Senior Jake Behne and junior Mark Wicke led the Bears with seven tackles each while senior Derek Breunig led the Mariners with a game-high 14 tackles, 10 solo.

The Bears wore their throw back uniforms to honor the 1963 football team coached by Otto Graham which went 8-0 in the regular season before losing in the Tangerine Bowl. It was fitting the Bears pitched shutout as the 1963 team known for its defense, had four shutouts during that magical season.

It was the first ever 15-0 shutout win in the 95 year history of the Coast Guard football program.
