St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 13, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team recorded a season-high 10 sacks and 16 tackles for a loss in a 17-10 upset win over No. 12 Wheaton College (Ill.) Saturday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU won its fourth-straight game to improve to 5-1 and 4-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), while Wheaton dropped to 4-2 and 3-2 in the CCIW. The Bears picked their first win against a ranked opponent since Oct. 9, 2010 (24-20 vs. No. 19 Wabash), and remain in a three-way tie for second place in the CCIW standings.

WashU limited Wheaton to -3 yards rushing on 28 carries, and forced three turnovers. The Bears also forced nine punts in the win.

"Our guys did everything we wanted them to do today," said WashU head coach Larry Kindbom, who picked up career win number 210. "What a great game. Our players played so hard and they put everything out on the field."

Senior linebacker Jake Coon led the defensive unit with 11 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble, while junior linebacker Jarrod Huther had nine tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks. Sophomore defensive lineman Peter Pigatti was all over the field with five tackles and 3.5 sacks.

Wheaton scored on its first possession after Curtis McWilliams hit Phillip Nichols across the middle for a 42-yard touchdown pass.

WashU's offense was kept in check during the first half, as senior Charles Coccia 22-yard field goal with 6:03 left in the second quarter was the lone score.

It took the Bears just four plays on their first possession in the third quarter to take the lead. Senior wide receiver Matt Goldberg hauled in a 22-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Johnny Davidson to make it 10-7.

WashU took advantage of great field position late in the third quarter for another score. Davidson capped a four-play, 35-yard drive with a one-yard TD pass to junior tight end Kyle Cummings to make it 17-7. The touchdown for Cummings was the first of his career.

The Bears forced a turnover on downs with five seconds left at the Wheaton 41-yard line to secure the upset victory.

Davidson finished the day 25-of-35 for 178 yards and two touchdowns, while junior running back John Fisher had 72 yards on 14 carries. Senior wide receiver Jason Singer returned to the lineup and had seven catches for 45 yards.

WashU hosts No. 18-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University (5-1, 5-0 CCIW) on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: The Bears are off to a 5-1 start for the first time since 2016 … Davidson went over 4,000 career yards of total offense (4,058) … Goldberg had two catches for 44 yards and is now 91 yards shy of 1,000 for his career … Senior defensive back Ben Marcus recorded four tackles, pushing him over 200 for his career.
