DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque football team turned the ball over early in Saturday's game and would trail 0-20 in the opening quarter of action to the Coe College Kohawks. The Spartans chipped away at the lead, scoring their first touchdown on a three yard scamper from quarterback Jacob Keller with 5:33 left of the half. UD missed their extra point and halftime score would be in favor of the Kohawks 20-6. The Spartans rallied back scoring 21 points in the second half, but the comeback ended with a desperation interception late in the game with the Kohawks collecting the narrow 34-27 victory on Chalmers Field.
UD led in just about every category, but the score. The Spartans compiled 22 first downs, threw for 299 passing yards and finished the afternoon with 456 total yards in the loss. UD was called for 12 penalties for 126 yards and suffered a pair of fumbles. Coe would finish with 382 yards in 66 plays.
Keller led the passing game by completing 20-34 passing attempts for 299 yards and scored three touchdowns. He found nine different receivers. DaMon Street grabbed two for 109 yards including an 82 yard touchdown score. Karletty Faamatuainu ended the day with six catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Elliott Pipkin was draped by the Kohawk defense and still finished with five catches for 58 yards. Sayvaun Roberts led the ground game with 10 carries for 79 yards and Tiger Geeslin carried the ball 13 times for 46 yards.
Dalton Wood and Adam Steingraeber would both have eight tackles. Tyler Geiman tied a school record with his eighth interception of the season. He has eight interceptions in eight games in 2021. He joins former Chicago Bears Michael Joseph who had eight interceptions in 2017 and Jim Martin who did the feat in back-to-back seasons in 1963 and 1964. Martin holds the all-time mark for a career with 24 interceptions (1963-66).
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Spartans as they travel to face #10-ranked Central College in Pella, Iowa next week on Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. The Spartans return home for the final A-R-C game on Senior Day against the Loras College Duhawks in the Key City Clash on Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. on Chalmers Field.
