More news about: Brockport

The SUNY Brockport football team capped its 2021 season with a 20-7 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson in the ECAC Clayton Chapman Bowl Game on Saturday at Bob Boozer Field.  Senior linebacker Lawrence Jenkins was named the game's Most Valuable Player as he finished the day with 2.0 sacks, two key forced fumbles, five tackles, two pass breakups, two quarterback hurries and two kickoff returns for a total of 50 yards. Junior runningback Jala Coad set a new program single game record with 50 carries for a total of 212 yards and he also added a first quarter receiving touchdown to lead the Brockport offense.  The 200+ yard rushing effort marked the third time Coad eclipsed 200 yards in a game this season and he capped the year with a career-high 1,410 yards rushing.

Brockport, making its fifth straight postseason appearance, finished the season with an 8-3 overall record and the Golden Eagles have recorded 41 total victories over the course of the last four seasons.  Washington & Jefferson was held to just nine total rushing yards on the ground as the President's record fell to 8-3 overall on the season.

Freshman quarterback Jack Cheshire made the most of his five completions as two of them resulted in key touchdowns for the Golden Eagles.  Cheshire and Coad connected on a 25 yard touchdown pass over the middle in the first quarter to put the Golden Eagles on top 7-0 with 8:40 left in the first.

Freshman kicker Nate Wigent finished the day with two field goals and eight total points for the Golden Eagles. His first field goal of the day gave Brockport a 10-0 lead with just 42 seconds to go on the first half clock.

Brockport took a commanding 17-0 lead midway through the third quarter when Imhotep Cromer caught a diving 30 yard touchdown pass in the back of the endzone. Cromer finished the day with two catches for 60 yards.

W&J's lone score of the day came on their first offensive play of the fourth quarter as Justin Heacock completed an 80 yard touchdown pass to Andrew Wolf to make the score 17-7 with 14:39 left in regulation.  Wolf capped the day with eight catches for 147 yards to lead the way for the Presidents.

Jenkins forced his second fumble of the day, which was scooped up by Hakeem Yaya and returned 25 yards to the W&J 15 yard line to give Brockport excellent field position with 11:28 to go in the contest.  Nate Wigent drilled a 27 yard field goal on the ensuing possession to make the score 20-7 in favor of the Golden Eagles with 9:07 to go on the fourth quarter clock.

Yaya played arguably his best game to date as he made five tackles, three tackles for a loss and scooped up one fumble.  Ben Damiani made a team-high seven stops and also picked off one pass for Brockport.  Sophomore defensive back Raylens Boutin also added an interception for Brockport.

Josh Greenwood capped his career in the green and gold with three tackles and one sack, while Andrew Covais also chipped in with four tackles of his own.

W&J quarterback Colton Jones completed 25 passes for 169 yards, but he also threw two INT's.  Payton Skalos caught eight balls for 41 yards. Sean Doran totaled a game-high 21 tackles for the Presidents, while Drew Ehrlich and Nick Freiwald each posted one INT.

Brockport absolutely dominated the time of possession 40:37-19:23 and the Golden Eagles held the visitors to a 1-for-11 effort on third down. Brockport was a perfect 2-for-2 on red zone chances and totaled three sacks on the day.
