BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England football team outscored Worcester Polytechnic Institute 28-0 in the fourth quarter to run away with a dominant 41-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Blue Storm Stadium.
What was a 13-3 game through the entirety of the third quarter quickly turned lopsided when the Nor'easters (2-0) poured on four touchdowns, including two by Chris Lang – one on the ground and another through the air – in the fourth. A 76-yard touchdown run by Austin Ingersoll (Watch) served as the exclamation point on UNE's victory, which avenged 31-13 loss suffered at WPI last season.
The Nor'easters racked up 643 total yards of offense, nearly living up to last week's 647-yard performance against Coast Guard, and did so while holding the Engineers (0-2) to just 132 total yards. UNE's defense held WPI's Aedan McDermott to just 52 yards on 10-of-31 passing while collecting three sacks and one interception (Chris Winslow). In the ground game, the Engineers were held under 100 yards.
Lang, now with back-to-back 300-yard outings to his credit to open the season, completed 28-of-41 attempts for 327 yards, two touchdowns and two picks. Damien Jones and Nathan Delgado were the workhorses in the backfield, combining for 37 carries and 124 yards. Ingersoll was the game's leading rusher after his late touchdown, finishing with 111 yards on just six carries. John Germano was the top threat on the outside with 11 catches for 109 yards.
Lang's first touchdown, an 18-yard strike to Tim Visbeek, opened the scoring midway through the first quarter (Watch). WPI answered with a 42-yard field goal, but UNE extended its lead to 13-3 early in the second quarter after Delgado punched it in from the Engineers' 1-yard line (Watch).
UNE's lead remained 13-3 until Lang ran up the middle, 29 yards to the endzone to provide the Nor'easters with additional breathing room (Watch). Lang hit Will McLoughlin with a beautiful pass down the right sideline on UNE's next possession (Watch), and the rout was on when Steven Rosario (Watch) and Ingersoll scored back-to-back touchdowns on consecutive drives to make it four straight fourth-quarter possessions that ended in the WPI endzone.
The Nor'easters have scored 97 points between the first two games of the 2025 season, marking the highest combined total for UNE in any two-game stretch in program history.
