Special teams and turnovers sink Waynesburg at Dickinson

CARLISLE, Pa. (September 13) – The Waynesburg University football team was defeated 52-19 at Dickinson College in the first-ever matchup between the Yellow Jackets and Red Devils at Biddle Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Devils scored touchdowns on each of their first four possessions to lead 28-7 at halftime. Dickinson scored a pair of special teams touchdowns in the third quarter with a 94-yard kickoff return and a blocked punt for another touchdown. Both teams added one score in the fourth quarter to bring the final margin to 52-19.

Waynesburg nearly matched Dickinson yard-for-yard, as the Devils had a 382-379 edge in total offense while the Jackets had a 24-23 edge in first downs. However, Waynesburg threw three interceptions on the day and Dickinson made multiple impact plays on special teams.

After trailing 21-0, the Jackets got on the scoreboard on their first snap after the two-minute timeout in the second quarter as Zayne Cawley (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) scored on a six-yard touchdown rush on 4th and 2. Dickinson answered with a five-play, 65-yard drive to carry a 28-7 lead into halftime.

Luke Hudson (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) connected with Isaac Trout (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Southmoreland) for a 64-yard catch-and-run on Waynesburg's opening drive of the second half to set up the Jackets inside the Dickinson 10. Two snaps later, Cawley scored from two yards out with 12:27 left in the third quarter to bring the score to 28-13.

Dickinson took the ensuing kickoff back for a Devils' touchdown, stopped Waynesburg on a fake punt deep in Jacket territory to set up a field goal and blocked a punt for a touchdown to bring the hosts' lead to 45-13 by the end of the third quarter.

Thomas Burke III (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg) found Giovanni Cipoletti (Amity, Pa. / Trinity) in the end zone on the final snap of regulation to bring the final margin to 52-19. The score was Cipoletti's first career touchdown reception.

The Jackets utilized two signal callers for the second-straight game. Hudson completed 9-of-15 passes for 139 yards and one interception. Burke went 12-for-19 for 81 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Cawley rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns on 17 attempts and caught three passes for 30 yards. Mutwali Stewart (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Central Catholic) rushed for 57 yards on nine carries.

Nine different Jackets notched a reception in the contest. Trout led the way with five catches for 92 yards. Dagyn Williams (Leslie, Ark. / Marshall) hauled in four passes for 37 and Tyler Richmond (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels) had five receptions for 29 yards.

Kevin Willis (Donora, Pa. / Ringgold) paced the Waynesburg defense with six tackles. Ewing Jamison (Jefferson, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) and Joanes Polynice (Winter Garden, Fla. / West Orange) added five tackles apiece.
