Games of Sept. 9-10, 2022

The Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware, is D3football.com's weekly honor roll, in its 24th season of recognizing the top performance at each position from the previous week. Players are nominated by schools.

Offense

QB Tyler Jarnagin, Sr., Benedictine

Jarnagin matched the Benedictine and Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference record with seven touchdown passes in a win against Loras. He threw for 502 yards on 25-for-35 passing, the third 500-plus yard showing of his career. Jarnagin completed passes to six separate receivers, three of which racked up over 100 yards.

OL Reins Leedy, Riley Craft, Brandon Guffy, Javal Reyes, Tyler Herring, Moravian

Moravian's starting offensive line helped the Greyhounds rack up 618 yards of total offense and control the clock for 38:24 in the Hounds' 43-28 Centennial Conference victory against Gettysburg. It was just the second start for each player and they improved from 44 to 297 rushing yards, 254 to 618 total yards and seven sacks allowed down to three from the season opener at TCNJ.

RB Jatron Bevly, Fr., Lakeland

In first collegiate start rushed 17 times for 343 yards and five touchdowns in just over two and a half quarters before leaving the game after his final TD with 5:42 left in the third quarter. This set the school single-game rushing record and came up just short of NACC single-game mark. Bevly scored touchdowns on runs of 36, 54, 75, 47 and 70 yards as Muskies took 34-10 lead, only to give up 31 straight points to Buena Vista after he left the game.

RB Dontal Wright, Fr., Olivet

Wright needed only five carries to rush for 197 yards and three touchdowns in Olivet's 54-14 victory over Eureka. His touchdown runs covered 45, 54 and 84 yards. Wright also caught a pass for 18 yards and returned the opening kickoff 28 yards to average 34.7 yards on his seven touches in the game. All of his stats came in the first half, as the starting offense did not play after halftime.

WR Nate Thornton, Jr., Monmouth

Thornton hauled in seven catches for 205 yards on Saturday while scoring three touchdowns. He scored on receptions of 50, 81 and 24, all in the first half. Thornton finished with the sixth-most receiving yards in a game in Monmouth history and he had 193 of those yards before halftime in a 48-0 win at Grinnell

WR Justin McMillian, Sr., Anna Maria

McMillian exploded for four touchdowns on five receptions for 184 yards in a 63-48 win over Mass-Dartmouth. His four touchdowns is a career high and his 184 yards is his second most in a game in his career. The four touchdowns also set a school single-game record for receiving touchdowns.

TE Cole Hissong, Sr., Wooster

Hissong turned eight receptions into 140 yards and a touchdown during Saturday's 49-21 win at Hiram. Hissong's touchdown marked the 65th of quarterback Mateo Renteria's career, with the Fighting Scots' signal-caller tying the career program record.

Defense

DE Hector Johnson, So., Endicott

Johnson set a career-high for tackles (6, all solo), sacks (4, 28 yards), and tackles for a loss (4, 28 yards) to go along with his first-ever field goal block (24-yard attempt) in Endicott's 24-0 win against WPI.

DT Kenny Hands, Sr., FDU-Florham

Hands had six tackles (four solo) which included four and a half tackles for a loss and two and a half sacks in a 28-21 win against William Paterson. He also posted one quarterback hurry in the victory.

DE Metoriah Faoilu, Sr., St. John's

Metoriah Faoliu totaled 11 tackles, including eight unassisted and three and a half tackles for loss, to go along with one and a half sacks and a quarterback hurry in the Johnnies' 37-34 win over nationally-ranked UW-River Falls. Faoliu finished with 11 yards for loss on his 3.5 takedowns behind the line of scrimmage.

LB Ben Burgan, Sr., Shenandoah

Burgan had 10 of his 12 tackles in the first half, including four tackles for loss and four sacks for a loss of 23 yards as the Hornets defeated North Carolina Wesleyan 45-0.

LB Tom Zatalava, Jr., Stevenson

Zatalava registered nine solo tackles with a forced fumble and pass breakup in Stevenson's 35-21 victory against No. 21 Salisbury.

LB Ernesto Mitchell, Sr., Morrisville State

Mitchell led the Mustangs defense in a 24-13 upset over visiting No. 23 Hobart. He posted a team high 12 tackles (five solo), registered one and a half tackles for loss and forced a fumble. His forced fumble resulted in a 76-yard scoop and score by the Mustangs. Morrisville limited Hobart to just one offensive touchdown.

LB Caleb Harmel, Sr., Trinity (Texas)

Harmel posted 11 tackles, five solo, as he helped lead No. 9 Trinity (Texas) to a 17-16 overtime win over No. 8 Wheaton. Harmel mixed in two and a half tackles for loss and half a sack among his 11 total stops, adding a pair of pass breakups. The Tigers limited Wheaton to just 59 yards rushing.

CB Justin Gerhart, Jr., Franklin & Marshall

Gerhart tied a school record with three interceptions during F&M's comeback attempt against No. 25 Susquehanna. Gerhart returned one of those interceptions for a touchdown and also made four tackles.

S Cameron Bannister, Sr., Central

Bannister had five solo tackles, including a tackle for loss, forced a fumble and had a pair of interceptions in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice for a 31-13 win against UW-Eau Claire.

S Justin Montijo, Sr., George Fox

Montijo set a career high with 17 tackles against Howard Payne, including 14 solo tackles, to help the Bruins improve to 2-0. Montijo also had an interception with a 16-yard return in the Bruins' 42-39 win.

CB Joshua Cordero, Sr., Cortland

Cordero tied a Cortland single-game record with three interceptions in the Red Dragons' 63-7 win over TCNJ. Cordero's three picks all came in the first half, including a 47-yard return for a touchdown early in the second quarter. All three of his interceptions either resulted in or set up Cortland scores. Cordero also finished the game with four solo tackles and a pass breakup.

Special teams

K Ryan Auer, So., Concordia-Chicago

Auer was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts and kicked a 45-yard field goal as Concordia-Chicago defeated Finlandia 45-7.

P Patrick Tuohy, Sr., Springfield

Tuohy had a standout showing in Springfield's game against Rowan as he punted the ball four times and averaged 37.5 yards per kick, including a long of 41 yards. All four of his attempts were inside the 20-yard line, and two were pinned at the 1- and 10-yard line as he played a key role in the field position battle. Tuohy missed practice during the week as he donated stem cells in Boston as part of the Be The Match program, with the hopes of saving the life of a 60-year old man with leukemia.

RET Kyle Howes, So., Susquehanna

Howes became the first Susquehanna player to take two kickoff returns back for touchdowns in the same game, while he tied the school record for kickoff return yards in a game with 188. He tied his own school record for longest kickoff return in program history with a 95-yarder to start the game on the opening kick, and then added a 93-yard scoring return in the second half to put Susquehanna up 38-13 over F&M. Howes now has three kickoff returns for touchdowns in his career, and has returned three of his last seven career kickoff returns for touchdowns.

ST Frank Roti, So., and Anthony Wachal, Sr., Illinois Wesleyan

With Ohio Wesleyan attempting a field goal, Roti blocked the kick that was scooped up by Anthony Wachal Jr. and returned for an 85-yard touchdown in a 45-21 win against Ohio Wesleyan. Wachal made the most of his return to the football field following three years in which he was plagued by injury.
