Carr named Hartwick head coach

More news about: Hartwick

Mark Carr, who has spent the last nine years as the offensive coordinator at Hartwick, was named head coach Aug. 12.

Carr replaces Steve Stetson, who was recently hired as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at New Hampshire. In 10 seasons at the helm, Stetson guided the Hawks to a 58-38-1 record and three postseason appearances.

"That's a good thing, that's a very good thing," Stetson said of Carr's appointment. He's been with us nine years, he's more than ready, more than willing, more than capable. I'm sure he will do a great job."

Besides his offensive coordinator duties, Carr was promoted to assistant head coach after the 1997 season. Throughout his coaching career, Carr has successfully called offensive plays that have helped the Hawks to be ranked among the Division III statistical team leaders. Additionally, Carr's offense has produced five All-Americans as well as wide receiver Ryan Johnson, the 2001 Eastern College Athletic Conference Northwest Player of the Year.

"Steve (Stetson) gave a great deal of autonomy to Mark as the offensive coordinator, and I have every confidence in Mark's ability to lead our football program into the future," said Ken Kutler, Hartwick's Director of Athletics. "Mark's talents as an offensive coordinator are certainly evident in the success that we have achieved over the years."

Carr is a New Hampshire graduate, where he set numerous passing records as the starting quarterback. After his senior season, Carr was invited to attend the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. In 1991, Carr returned to New Hampshire and helped the team win the 1991 Yankee Conference championship as the quarterbacks coach.

"Every head coach has their own style, and I plan on bringing my own intense style to the sidelines this season," said Carr. "Stetson was a tremendous coach and I learned a great deal from the little nuances to the major coaching philosophies."

Carr's play calling ability has helped the Hawks to establish numerous NCAA individual and team records. In 1996, A.J. Pittorino showed Carr's ability to move the ball when he gained 436 yards rushing in a game -- the second highest total in Division III history. Carr's offense was ranked third in passing yards per game (337.7) in 1997. Last season, junior quarterback Daniel Pincelli threw 40 touchdown passes, which tied him for fifth place all-time in a single season.
