Moore named NEFC special teams player of the week

More news about: Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University freshman kicker Mark Moore (Hattiesburg, Miss.) was selected as the New England Football Conference (NEFC) special teams player of the week as announced by conference publicist Roger Crosley on Sunday morning. For his oustanding performance this week, Moore has also earned recognition on USA Today's "Campus Rivalry" page.

Moore booted the Seahawks to a thrilling 25-22 victory over Union College this Saturday with a game-winning 49-yard field goal as time expired. It was the first field goal attempt of his collegiate career and set the record for the longest field goal in program history.

After Union had tied the game in the final minute of the fourth quarter on a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, the Seahawks prepared to get the ball back with just 48 seconds remaining on the clock.

Salve Regina received a major break when the ensuing kickoff sailed out of bounds, giving them possession at their own 40-yard line. Quarterback Jimmy Connelly (Berlin, Conn.) quickly moved the offense into Union territory after a pass interference call and a pair of completions going to sophomore Richie Edwards (Trumbull, Conn.) and Trey Scales (Boston, Mass.). With the ball on the Union 32-yard line and just four seconds left on the clock, the stage was set for Moore.

The Dutchmen tried to ice the freshman from Mississippi with a timeout, but Moore was unphased, drilling the record-setting field goal through the uprights with room to spare.

Moore and the Seahawks will be back in action this Saturday when they travel to take on Montclair State at noon.
