Blades nominated for Good Works Team

More news about: Hobart

Senior offensive lineman Jarrid Blades is a nominee for the 2011 Allstate American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. Now in its 20th year, the award recognizes the selfless contributions to volunteerism and community service made by college football student-athletes across the nation.

Blades is one of a record 132 nominees from all levels of the NCAA and NAIA. The 22-member Good Works Team will be announced in September.

Blades planned and coordinated "Touchdowns and Tackles for Happiness House." The Statesmen secured pledges from business and fans for every touchdown and tackle Hobart recorded against WPI last season. The team generated $2,500 for Happiness House, a local school for children with special needs. Blades and his teammates also visited Happiness House during game week, reading to the kids and delivering replica footballs. The Statesmen returned to the school after the game and delivered autographed pictures.

In addition, the Ellenville, N.Y, native has volunteered on campus with the National Student-Athlete Day activities, the HWS College Experience Program, the Phi Sigma Kappa Turkey Trot, Relay For Life, and several green initiatives. He has also assisted with Hobart Athletics fundraising efforts on behalf of the Wounded Warrior Project and Soldiers' Angels.

Off campus, Blades has donated his time with the Geneva Community Library Sale, the Geneva High School Festival of Nations, the Rochester City Scholars Program, and the Geneva Rotary Club Santa Train.

On the gridiron, Blades is a two-time Liberty League All-Academic selection. He has steadily expanded his role over the past two seasons, earning time in the starting lineup in 2010. Last season, the Statesmen led the Liberty League in scoring offense, passing offense, total offense, passing efficiency, red zone offense, and third down conversion.

A political science major, Blades interned with New York State Senator Michael Nozzolio last summer.
