FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

(Games of September 24)

 

OFFENSIVE

Jake Mullin, QB, Jr., McMurry

McMurry junior quarterback Jake Mullin (Burleson, TX / BHS) was 28 of 46 passing for 448 yards and four touchdowns and also added a 22-yard scoring run to fuel a 63-31 victory over East Texas Baptist. Mullin guided an offense that churned out 753 total yards, including a new conference single-game record of 617 passing. Mullin, who takes the league's weekly offensive award for the second time this season, finished with 47 yards rushing and also averaged 47 yards on three punts.

 

CO-DEFENSIVE

Walter Barreda, DL, So., Texas Lutheran

Texas Lutheran sophomore defensive lineman Walter Barreda (Houston, TX / Sharpstown HS) had seven tackles – six solo and four for a loss of seven yards – forced a school-record three fumbles and recovered one of them to help the Bulldogs record a 51-13 win over Howard Payne. He spearheaded a unit that shut out HPU after the first quarter and allowed only 200 yards of total offense.

 

Will Morris, SS, Sr., McMurry

McMury senior strong safety Will Morris (Katy, TX / New Mexico State) had seven tackles – six solo – a 29-yard interception return for a touchdown, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to help the War Hawks to a 63-31 win over East Texas Baptist. Morris, who takes the league's weekly defensive award for the second time this season, also added a pass break-up and guided a unit that kept ETBU from scoring in the second and third quarter.

 

SPECIAL TEAMS

Allen Cain, PK, Jr., Texas Lutheran

Texas Lutheran junior place kicker Allen Cain (San Antonio, TX / Stevens HS) made three field goals – from 27, 27 and 23 yards out – and was 6-for-6 on extra-points to help the Bulldogs record a 51-13 win over Howard Payne. Cain, who takes the league's top special teams honor for the second time this season, also handled kickoff duties. His three field goals set a TLU single-game record.

 
 

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES

OFFENSE: Louisiana College RB Ryan Montague had 200 yards and two TDs on just 12 carries to guide a 52-17 win over MC. . . . Texas Lutheran QB Mitchell Bunger was 15 of 22 passing for one TD and also ran for another score to lead a win over HPU. . . . Mary Hardin-Baylor QB LiDarral Bailey was 16-for-20 passing for 201 yards and two TDs to guide a 35-17 win over fellow nationally-ranked HSU.

DEFENSE: Louisiana College DE Peter Ford had six tackles, one sack and a forced fumbles in a win over MC. . . . Mary Hardin-Baylor LB Ty Dooley had 15 tackles to guide a win over HSU. . . . Mississippi College DB Jarrad Craine had two interceptions, including one he returned for a score in a loss to LC. . . . Hardin-Simmons DB Emmanuel Akers had 13 tackles – 11 solo – and an interception in a loss to UMHB. . . . Howard Payne LB Demetrius Cody had 15 tackles – 11 solo – forced a fumble and recovered another one in a loss to TLU.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Mississippi College P Jacob Chancellor averaged 45.8 yards on eight booms and placed four of them inside the 20-yard line. . . . Mary Hardin-Baylor PK/P Chad Peevey was 5-for-5 on extra-points and averaged 34.2 yards per punt. . . . Howard Payne P Cote Schacherl averaged 47 yards over seven booms, with a long of 61. . . . McMurry P Jake Mullin averaged 47 yards on three punts, with a long of 58.
