OTTERBEIN: 

THE GAME

No. 2 ranked Mount Union returns home to host Otterbein in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at 1:30 pm at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance.

Mount Union's defense forced four turnovers and held Capital to a season-low 156 yards in a 27-7 win last Saturday in Columbus. Nick Driskill (Wabash, Ind./Southwood) had two interceptions, Arthur Smith (Miami, Fla./Killian) returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown and Charles Dieuseul (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) had nine tackles with a pair of sacks to lead the defense. On offense, Jake Simon (Parma Heights/Holy Name) came off the bench for an injuredJeremy Murray (Martins Ferry/Martins Ferry) and rushed for a career-high 169 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown. Quarterback Neal Seaman(Louisville/Louisville) also ran for 75 yards with a touchdown as Mount Union rushed for 328 yards on a season-high 53 carries.

Otterbein knocked off Muskingum, 17-13 to end a game losing streak and pick up its first OAC win of the season. Otterbein quarterback Austin Schlosser posted his third 300-yard passing game over the last four games with 314 yards on 21-of-33 passing with a touchdown and also rushed for a score. Trey Fairchild was his top target with seven catches for 122 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Korpieski had six tackles and broke up four passes to lead a defense that had two interceptions and a pair of sacks.

THE SERIES

This is the 44th meeting between the teams with Mount Union holding a 39-4 lead in the series dating back to a 12-7 Otterbein win on October 16, 1937 in Alliance. The Raiders have won 33 straight meetings going back to a 24-17 Otterbein win in 1977 in Alliance.

THE COACHES

Larry Kehres (Mount Union '71) is 310-23-3 (.926) in his 26th season as head coach as one of the most successful coaches in college football history. His teams have won 21 OAC Championships, including the last 19 in a row, along with 10 of the last 18 NCAA Division III National Championships.

Joe Loth (Otterbein '91) is 48-40 (.545) in his 9th season at his Alma mater. He led the Cardinals to a 9-2 record and first-ever NCAA postseason appearance on his way to OAC Coach of the Year honors three seasons ago. Loth, also the 2005 OAC Coach of the Year, has a combined coaching record is 55-62 as he was the head coach at Kean (NJ) prior to Otterbein. He had assistant coaching stints at Southern Methodist, Western Connecticut, Capital and Rhode Island.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS

Four of Otterbein's five losses have been by a touchdown or less and one of those was in double overtime so don't let the 2-5 record fool you.

The Cardinals feature the OAC's No. 1 ranked passing offense led by the OAC's passing yards leader in senior quarterback Austin Schlosser (270.7 passing yds/game). Schlosser leads the conference with 1,895 yards, a 63.6 completion percentage and 16 touchdowns. His top target is fellow senior Trey Fairchild, who tops the OAC in receiving yards (884 yds) and is second in receptions (52). Junior running back Cody Green leads Otterbein and is fourth in the OAC in rushing at 76.8 yards per game.

Otterbein's defense is led by senior linebacker Shane Centers, who is third in the OAC with 77 tackles and leads the team with 8.0 tackles for loss. Senior defensive back Anthony Korpieski leads the OAC with eight pass breakups on the season.

On special teams, junior punter Aaron Kingcade leads the conference in punting at 40.7 yards per punt.

DID YOU KNOW?

The four interceptions by the Mount Union defense were the most in a single game since seven vs. Montclair State (N.J.) in the NCAA Playofffs on Nov. 28, 2009. It was the most in a regular season game since five against Wilmington on Oct. 22, 2009.

SIMON SAYS

Junior running back Jake Simon (Parma Heights/Holy Name) came off the bench for an injured Jeremy Murray (Martins Ferry/Martins Ferry) and had 157 of his career-high 169 rushing yards in the second half in the win at Capital. Simon, who rushed for a touchdown, also had two catches for 12 yards to account for 181 yards of total offense on the day. On the season, he has 366 yards and four touchdowns on 43 carries.

MR. SMITH GOES TO THE END ZONE

Senior linebacker Arthur Smith (Miami, Fla./Killian) had a 40-yard interception return for a score at Capital last week. The Raiders had four interceptions for the game as junior safety Nick Driskill (Wabash, Ind./Southwood) had two and fellow junior safety Alex Nicholls had a pick in his first career start. For the season, Mount Union has 16 interceptions from 11 different players and three of them have been returned for touchdowns.

SEAMAN ON THE RUN

Junior quarterback Neal Seaman (Louisville/Louisville) had a career-high 75 yards rushing last week. On the season, Seaman has 173 yards rushing on 33 attempts (5.2 yards per carry) with two rushing touchdowns, while over the air he has 777 yards passing with eight touchdowns.

CHARLES IN CHARGE

Junior defensive end Charles Dieuseul (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) led the team with nine tackles and 2.0 sacks last week at Capital. On the season, Dieuseul leads the team with 9.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks and is tied for the conference lead with 2.0 forced fumbles.

PURPLE RAIDERS IN THE PROs

Wide receiver Pierre Garcon is in his fourth season as a member of the Indianapolis Colts and had three catches for 31 yards receiving in their 62-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints. In his rookie season, Cecil Shorts III will made his national television debut as the Jacksonville Jaguars take on the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. Two Raiders in the NFL coaching ranks is Dom Capers, the defensive coordinator of Green Bay Packers and Nick Sirianni as the offensive quality control coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

NEW TURF, NEW HOME UNIFORMS

Mount Union replaced its 10-year old AstroPlay surface with a new FieldTurf playing surface this past summer. Fans will notice that the football and soccer lines are permanent with two tones of alternating green and black end zones. The black also carries over to new Nike home purple jerseys that the Raiders will wear this season. Mount Union's newest teams -- men's and women's lacrosse will start varsity play in the spring of 2013 and their lines will be painted onto the field. New turf was put in the South end zone which moved the students and band to the North end leading to Mount Union warming up on North side and entering the stadium from the Northwest corner of stadium.
