MIAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week
Kelson
Carr, Bethel
North Bend, Wash. / Eastside Catholic
This season, No. 20-ranked Bethel had the MIAC's top rushing attack
by far, averaging 279.6 yards per game, or more than 65 yards per
game more than any other team in the conference. The Royals proved
how good they were on the ground again in Saturday's 42-7 win over
Augsburg as senior running back Kelson Carr (North
Bend, Wash./Eastside Catholic) had an unforgettable day in the
final game of his career. The senior - who only had 45 carries in
the first nine games - racked up 116 yards and three touchdowns on
18 carries to lead the Auggies to a season-ending win and a
second-place finish in the conference. For his performance, Carr
was named the final MIAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week of
the 2011 season.
With his MIAC weekly award, Carr became the third Bethel running
back and fourth Royal overall to earn Offensive Player-of-the-Week
honors. He led Bethel to 312 rushing yards in the win while
averaging 6.4 yards per carry, topping the 100-yard mark and he did
not record any negative yardage on any of his 18 carries. Carr
scored on runs of three, six and 15 yards, to help Bethel pull away
in the blowout win. This season, Carr had a very good average of
5.5 yards per carry. He ran the ball 63 times for 349 yards and
four touchdowns for a Bethel team that averaged 5.7 yards per carry
and racked up nearly 2,800 yards as a team on the ground.
Unfortunately for Carr and his teammates, the Royals' season ended
with Saturday's win. Bethel closed the regular season with an 8-2
overall record and a 6-2 conference record, good for a second-place
tie with St. Olaf in the conference standings. However, Bethel was
passed over for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Football
Playoffs. The Royals two losses came by a combined 12 points.
MIAC
Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week
Bobby
Fischer, Saint John's
Plymouth, Minn. / Osseo
The Saint John's football team finished the 2011 season
with a surge, winning its last four games and ending with an
emphatic 61-0 victory over Hamline Saturday. One of the stars of
Saturday's win was cornerback Bobby Fischer
(Plymouth, Minn./Osseo) who closed his great season with one of the
better games a defensive back can have. The junior intercepted
three passes to help the Johnnies score the shutout win and, in the
process, finished as the MIAC leader in several pass-defense
categories. For his performance, Fischer was named the final MIAC
Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for the 2011 season.
Fischer's three interceptions are the most by a Johnnie in a single
game since 2003, when Paul Gans had four against Augsburg. He also
made two tackles in the win and returned the three picks for a
total of 99 yards. Fischer's third interception - and his 40-yard
return - set Saint John's up at the Piper 15-yard line for a short
scoring drive to make it 55-0 early in the fourth quarter.
Fischer's huge day resulted in him leading the MIAC in
interceptions (seven), interception return yards (243) and passes
defended (17). He also made 35 tackles (20 solo) for the Johnnies
this season.
The four-straight wins to end the season helped Saint John's score
a fourth-place finish and another season above .500 with a 6-4
overall record and a 5-3 conference record. The six wins helped
legendary coach John Gagliardi increase his record-win total to
484, and with a lot of talent back - like Fischer - in 2012, the
fans in Collegeville are already excited for next
season.
MIAC Football Special Teams Player-of-the-Week
Bill
Moritz, Carleton
Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson
All season, the Carleton football team has enjoyed great
special teams play, and that trend continued right through the
Knights' final game of the regular season. Saturday's special teams
star was punter Bill Moritz (Hutchinson, Minn.),
who played a huge role in the field position game against Gustavus.
Though the Gusties prevailed, 21-7, Moritz had a great game with
his season-long punt and several that were either un-returnable or
pinned Gustavus deep in its own territory. For his punting
performance, Moritz has been named the final MIAC Football Special
Teams Athlete-of-the-Week this fall.
Moritz punted seven times in Saturday's loss for 229 yards and a
good average of 32.7 yards per punt, despite battling windy
conditions throughout the game. One of his kicks went for a
season-best 51 yards, and his seven kicks were returned for just a
total of two yards. To top it off, Moritz was the only MIAC punter
to pin his opponent inside their own 10-yard line twice this week.
In fact, Mortiz trapped Gustavus back at its 3-yard line and 1-yard
line, the latter of which led to an interception, returned for
Carleton's only score of the game. This season, Moritz ranked third
in the MIAC with only 1.7 yards per punt return. He punted 53 times
this year for 1,624 yards (30.6 average) with two touchbacks, 17
fair catches and 11 inside the 20.
With the loss, Carleton finished the 2011 season with a 2-8 overall
record and an eighth-place finish in the MIAC with a 1-7 mark. The
Knights' two wins game against Hamline and against rival Macalester
in nonconference action. Moritz earned his Athlete-of-the-Week
honor in his final game, as he is one of the team's
seniors.
