HCAC Players of the Week

Football: Offense – Jonny West, Franklin College

 

FranklinCollege quarterback Jonny West (Avon, Ind./Speedway) amassed 504 total yards in the Grizzlies’ 58-29 win over Hanover Saturday and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Player of the Week on offense for the second time.  The junior completed 29 of his 43 passes for 315 yards and five touchdowns, while adding 36 yards and a score on the ground to lead the Franklin offense.  The blue and gold earned their third consecutive HCAC crown and trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs with the win.  No. 16 Franklin (8-2, 8-0 HCAC) will travel to Adrian (MI) Saturday to open tournament play.

Football: Defense – Stephen Coble, Manchester University

ManchesterUniversity defensive lineman Stephen Coble (Edwardsburg, Mich./H.S.) led the Spartans defense in a 38-0 shutout win over rival Anderson Saturday and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Player of the Weekon defense for the second time.  The sophomore recorded nine tackles, four tackles for loss, and three sacks to help put a wrap on the school’s first winning season since 1997.  The win over Anderson also retained the Bronze Ball trophy for the fourth time in five seasons.  The Spartans defensive unit limited the Ravens to only 98 yards of total offense in the contest.  Manchester (6-4, 6-2 HCAC) finished the season second in the HCAC standings.

Football: Special Teams – Austin Sweeney, Bluffton University

 

BlufftonUniversity’s Austin Sweeney (Adrian, Mich./Whitmer) finished the day with eight points as the Beavers handled rival Defiance 27-24 in two overtimes Saturday and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Player of the Week on special teams for the second time.  The junior kicker hit field goals from 40 and 22 yards and was a perfect 2-for-2 on extra points.  The 40-yard field goal was a season high and the 22-yard make proved to be the game-winner in the second overtime frame.  Bluffton (6-4, 5-3 HCAC) finished the season with a winning record for the first time since 2000.
